A few days age I posted a question on the main forum about autoimmune thyroid disease seeking information for a friend. Evelyn suggested to me how to do a search on Pub Med and as a result I found some rather interesting suggestions.

Apparently silent (undiagnosed, mild) coeliac disease (inflammation of the small intestine caused by gluten intolerance) can be the trigger for many autoimmune diseases, Sjogren's, and the cause of lactose intolerance.

I would suggest that those who are lactose intolerant consider this possibility and try adding gluten free to starch free. Since you would already be avoiding wheat it shouldn't be too difficult, and if it works dairy could be back on the menu.

Hi Bilko,

Evelyn finds the info. Do you think this supports the idea that the primary trigger for autoimmune diorders in general could be hormonal? I know it would seem obvious with teenage onset of auto immune disorders. Maybe food poisoning and parasite infestations cause a hormonal response prior to the autoimmune response.

All these interesting hypothesis can be so hard to investigate with a limited medical understanding. This gives me some ideas for the midlife college endeavors i am undertaking.

Ike,

My own explanation would be rather more prosaic. AS is an immunological cross reaction between Klebsiella pneumoniae and HLA B27, the klebs fuelled primarily by starch. But if the milk isn't digested, then by lactose as well. And maybe the inflamed small intestine magnifies the effect of any klebs in that region.

And gluten only entered our (the ancient Egypticians) diet with wheat about 6000 years ago. And our digestive systems struggle with it along with the starch.

Questions Bilko,
Why did my lactose/milk sensitivity happen after I had been starch free for a couple weeks? Immune system overload still I know. Aren't we automatically gluten free if we aren't having any wheat?
This makes sense to me in that I can tolerate rice or potatoes much better in small amounts than I can wheat products. I did show allergies to wheat/yeast/milk among my other 23 ! I still can't have milk, although I tolerate some cheeses in moderation. I always thought it was the lactose I reacted to but I think I reacted to a protein drink with whey in it. I don't want to "test" it again for the sake of science though!!
Thanks for this post! Hope someone can "weed" threw my question somewhat! I am still experimenting with NSD/LSD or allergen elimination.

janet,

the lactose intolerance was probably caused by a total re-organization of your intestinal flora. lactose is fermented by intestinal bacteria and since you have drastically changed your diet to reduce bacterial concentrations, the lactose cannot be fermented by anything.

hardened cheeses do not have much lactose since they are fermented out during the cheese making process.

ike,

according to the "alternative world", many autoimmune diseases have their origins in the gut. the GI tract accounts for a large portion of our immune system activity and monitoring since the GI tract is one of the easiest source of antigen entry into our bodies. i think the allopathic community has even done some studies to show that subclinical gut inflammation is present in many sufferes of autoimmune disorders. i have heard almost all rheumatic diseases and others like MS attributed to malfunctions in the digestive system. the truth is probably somewhere in between.

regarding AS, i do think that defects in the GI tract can trigger the disease. the role of subclinical gut inflammation in the pathogenesis of Spa's is a topic of research.

Hey Ken,
Thanks! Is this why people who are lactose intolerant can take acidopholis (sp?) and eat dairy? I have wondered about this with those who flare with dairy. Acidopholis is a PRObiotic right? I would KILL to have an occasional chocolate bar or ice cream!

janet,

im not sure what specific bacteria ferment lactose, i think many do. you can try taking a probiotic, but watch out for bad reactions. you could have a short term herx reaction which is a good thing, but some have reported problems with all probiotics. for "normal" people, probiotics are a good thing. you need these bacteria. however, for those who have messed up guts and immune systems, they may cause problems. if you do not experience a bad reaction, it is probably a good thing to take a probiotic.

flaring with dairy could be due to the lactose or just plain old food sensitivity. i know of people who had part of their intestines removed and can no longer tolerate lactose. i think this is because without parts of their intestines, there is no bacteria to ferment the lactose

Dear Friends,
I gained a lot of information that makes sense in regard to my feeling bloated and very stiff in the small ofmy back. I did go off wheat, milk, sugar and even chocolate and coffee. Result, I lost nearly 14 lbs and my siffness was much better. I have slid back into my eating wheat and of course I feel bloated and stiff, plus the IBS is worse. I must use some self control, the Dragon Slayer has chastized me for over a year. I must gain control of my health once again!

Hi Lon,

If they only made a will power Pill. I guess it would problably have side affects.

I too have given up starch, beer, and caffiene. And more recently pot
Last week it was too much. I caved in. 5 beers thursday with nothing more than a headache the next day. Plenty o wine on Sunday with 5 glorious breaded onion rings after three cups of coffee at breakfast. I've been paying since. At least I avoided the weed. .

I guess it's time for the sack cloth and ashes to reinstate the balance. (fast)

We'll regain control together,
ike
