I wondered if this is just a lack of excercise thing (winter here, so not so much excercise, not out-and-about so much) or whether it's a beginning of something possibly more serious... any thoughts appreciated:

I have this dull pain, accompanied by mild pins and needles sensation, deep in my hip, and down the back of my left leg. There is also some lower back pain which seems to have intensified at the same time. It's no huge deal, I can walk OK, it's just uncomfortable and feels strange - has been like this for a few weeks.

I don't want to start worrying about things that are just normal - but I've had new psoriasis breakouts in places I never had them before, and now new pains too. This is with a background of recently stopping Methotrexate after giving it another 3 month try. (It affected my liver again).

any thoughts?

Shane

Hi,
Oh gosh, I've had this many times. (Unfortunately in the states they sent me home with Aleve and told me it would go away) The last time (Sept 05 –first time here in Switzerland) I was in so much pain I could hardly walk. My rheumatologist did some testing and eventually it came out to be inflammation and swelling was pressing on nerves and causing the burning, pins and needles feeling. I was on complete bed rest for a week and high doses of steroids to bring the swelling down and what pain meds they could offer me. I'm allergic to most of the good ones. :O(
I'd see your doctor right away. It sound mild at the moment but it's nothing to play around with. The swelling can get bad enough to permanently damage your nerves especially if your spinal cord is involved.
Hope you feel better soon.

hi shane....

I have the same pain often. no other simptoms, but such pain is the one that comes the most often. lower back is sort-of daily hurt, but the leg is a measure for me how am i doing - any bigger change of weather makes me "print" when i walk (my footsteps look a little bit different after my walk in days when it hurts, i call it "printing" cuz you can tell my trail because one step is shorter and less secure than the other)...
my pain is due to the pinched nerve (ischias) in the lumbal part of the spine and my pain usually goes away a little bit after some walking, like, an hour, or something, once my leg gets warmed up, but if it was really bad to start with - it doesn't go away, it chases me like on marry-go-around. when it was really bad, my knee would fail to support me randomly - it would just skip a step, like i didn't ask it do do the step for me, it'd bend in the middle of my walk.... i never fell down, but i had to be really careful because i could and would kneel at the funniest and oddest moments...

however, in those days, i find practice particularly hard to do, yet enormously useful. if i start practice patiently, slowly, with slow and shallow moves and gradually adjust it, it takes time and some pain to do it, but it can really really help me through the day. of course, sometimes it hurts too much for practice, but again, luckily for me, not so often, yet.... chiropractic would also help me sometimes, but i've read somewhere here that chiropractic is not recommended for people with AS, so please take ALL MY ADVICE as something that needs to be run by someone more experienced and knowledgeable... i am a newbee (just got diagnosed recently), although that my methods of practicing and seeing chiropractic occasionaly help me, it might hurt someone else at different stage of AS, or with different disks fused, etc. also, i've had one of the best chiro's in the country available around here (i was his best man at the wedding. now he is living around vancouver, CA.. if anyone needs a home visit, i am be happy to recommend him...)
also, such ischiatic pains are what made me go to the doc in the first place, after years and years of enduring my pain. in fact, i am still coping with pain well enough taht i didn't pick up painkillers she prescribed to me (knock-knock on the wood). i have plenty of time to start with those, i don't want to until it gets so bad that i won't be able to endure it no more without a glossy colored happy pills...

all the best,

L.

Hi Shane, Very interested in your symptons, I have been to my GP with same problem. I have had pain in my left hip plus pins and needles (very painful)for some months. When my top leg outside muscle them went numb I thought I had better do something about it. The outcome was my GP recognised the symptons and I shall be seeing a Consultant for injections into the joint. Its inflamation of the surrounding sheath, linked we assume to AS - I wonder way its the left hip etc. When I see the Consultant, I will post his comments. Are you able to sleep on left side, I can't as the pain is so bad it quickly wakes me up>

Thanks all - the symptom still seems to be there, it's not getting worse, but not going away either. I guess I need to talk to the specialist about it: It's not big pain at the moment, but it's not right either.

The sciatic nerve thing is interesting - I'm not really all that familiar with the anatomy of the human body, maybe it would be helpful if I did a bit of studying.

Thanks again!

Shane

it is the longest nerve in human body, when it gets pinched between disks it hurts from the lower back all the way down to your toes.... read out link above, and definitely get doctor's opinion...

Hi Shane,
The problems you are describing, are from the nerves that run from your lower back down the legs. When there is pressure on those nerves in your lower back, you feel a "toothache" type of pain in the legs and can be accompanied by tingling or numbness in you legs and or feet. When was your last MRI? Sometimes epidural shots help depending on the MRI findings.

WOW! What a time to see your post Shane. I have had the same thing for the past few weeks, except the hip pain was very severe at times and I needed to use a walker. Went to my Rehumy, had x-rays, Rehumy sent me to Ortho. Surgeon, he sent me for MRI, back to Surgeon and getting cortazone injections tomorrow.
Sure hope it helps. I will let you know.

Stay Well

Richard

Hi Shane,

I had problems like that last winter. It is a lot milder this year. What is consistent is the pain on the left side that stretches right down to my left foot and heel. I am now into week 8 of this problem

The others are right to point out that it could be a pinched nerve. It could be that things have been stirred up since you went of the methotrexate. Go and see your doctor to discuss these symptoms and see if he has any suggestions for you.

I cannot advise the best approach on exercise and stretching, just do what your body tells you to do, because your body knows best what you need.

BTW I have had a continuing problem since 1988 with regard to my left hip, which has turned out to be my SI joint ;-)
