Hello there.
Nice to meet you.
I hope you don't think I am being disrespectful when I say this. It is certainly not my intention.
When I was at school I was taught in English lessons how to use quotations in an argument (I have looked this up to make sure I am not making this up!)
I have noticed a lot lately, that people are taking a little piece of what someone has said to use in an argument against them.
There is no problem with this if the quotation is representative of the essence of what someone is trying to say.
The problem arises, when you take it out of the context it was written in. I think if you re-read the post you quoted from and think about what is being said as a whole, what circumstances the post has been made in, and what it is in response to - perhaps you might see that your quotations distort what the writer was saying and why. I hope I have explained that properly.
It is often difficult to stay objective when one is reading or discussing something that provokes an emotional response. But when one is quoting a person directly it is very important to do so in context, unless of course you are asking for clarification on a point or something like that.
I hope I have not offended you by saying this, and say again that I have noticed lots of people doing this lately.
I am a new member and I know that you have a long history with this site. I hope that I have not overstepped the mark here.
Take care,
Tink
