Just wondering how many people here have had mono. All my troubles started in college after a horrendous bout of mono. Had to withdraw from college for 4 months and when I went back, all my back and pain troubles started which was 13 years ago. I am HLA-B27 negative but the doctor says I have something in the spondoarthropathy family. The official diagnosis is sacroilliitis. I am able to function on Voltaren but here in Florida we are having thunderstorms every afternoon (since April) and it is killing me. Now the aching and spasming has moved into the shoulder blade (rhomboid muscle) area. I am so irritable when I constantly ache and can't get comfortable. Today I woke up and felt tons better but then again, the day is bright and sunny. Needless to say, my family still thinks all this is in my head.

Anyway, just wondering if anyone else with this has had mono. You know, a person grasps at straws after a while to understand the cause.

Hi,

Yes, I had MONO when I was about 20 & still test postivie for EBV. (Maybe everybody does.) It may be purely coincidental, but it wasn't long after that when I started having neck stiffness. However, I also fell on my head around that time and can't remember which happened first.

Yes, I had mono when I was 22. However, my symptoms started when I was about 15. The only thing I can think of before that in the way of illness was German Measles which I had at 13, and several bouts of tonsilitis before my tonsils were removed at age 13. My symptoms did not get any worse after the mono. At that age I had infrequent pain in my right hip, but it was very occasional, usually I would have 6 months to two years in between these flares in my hip. I guess it was probably my sacroiliac, not really my hip. At the time the doctor could find nothing wrong with me and it was a mystery. I knew it was real when it happened. It took until I was 42 to be diagnosed! Up to that point it didn't really slow me down much, except occasionally, but at 42, ow!! Two straight years of almost non-stop pain!

Val.

Yes. I had Mono was I was younger. I think I was 11 or 12. Put me out of school for a long time and was constantly going to the doctor for blood tests. (Kind of like now!) What and interesting thought. Never thought about it. Keep us posted with the info because you never know where these things lead.

Thanks.

Allison

I've read a lot about AS being triggered by an injury or an infection, so this might have been the culprit. I think mine was triggered by pregnancy, had a lot of back pain during it and during labor - - and it never went away.

Where in Florida? I just moved down here from Mass. (to be closer to family, my husband died suddenly last March) and those afternoon thunderstorms are really something I live in Port St. Lucie, move into my new house on Tuesday

Hi Cheryl,

We live in Flagler Beach which is 1/2 way between Daytona and St. Augustine. Luckily yesterday was mostly sunny and I could tell as soon as I woke up that my pain was not going to be as bad for 1 day!!
