Well Day one went very well for me.
Was out school shopping with the kids today and of course they want McDonalds. We were at the McDonalds in WalMart so their menu is limited. But got by with ordering a big and tasty.... tossed the bun and ate the meat, tomatoe and lettuce. Not bad considering lol. Actually I think it was better that way. And I had thought watching the kids have their french fries would be hard for me but it really wasn't. That even made me more determined to do this.
Grocery shopping was a trip I was truely amazed at how many foods have starch in them. I would pick something up thinking "oooooo I can have this".... then read the label and WHAT?!?!?!? why would they need to add starch?!?!?
And finding a salad dressing without starch?? yeahhhh righhhhht!

I do have a couple of questions......

Are any of these starchy or contain starch???

canola oil
water chestnuts
bamboo shoots
cucumbers

and does anyone know a good cocktail sauce recipe that is starch free?? That was the only mistake I (hope) I made today was made a shrimp cocktail and hadn't read the ingredients for the sauce.... high fructose corn syrup

I did find myself getting really shaky this evening. I ate one small piece of dark chocolate with almonds and felt a little better. Is this a common feeling when starting? and will it level off after getting used to not eating all the starches?

Thankyou all so much. With all the encouragement I have recieved already here.... I know I can KickAS with the NSD

Have a great day

Pam

Hi Pam,

So happy to hear your going to give this a try. I haven't felt this good in years and years and I have only been on this diet since late May.

I do know water chestnuts are out, but not sure about the rest. I have had cuccumbers with no problem but then I don't eat them very often.

A tip about the shaky feeling... try Welches grape juice before you try anything else. The natural sugar will give you that left you need. There is something really special about that purple grape juice. Sometimes it seems a bit thick to me so I thin it down with a little unsweetened apple juice. It helps to save a little money that way also since grape juice costs so much more then apple juice.

Another good tip for this diet is to eat more, but smaller, meals during the day. Or if you have three meals with the family then arrange to have snacks in-between. Raw apples are good, or a handful of sunflower seeds. They (the seeds) travel well in the car too for easy fast pick-me-ups on the go. I get the jars of shelled dry roasted generic brand as they are cheap and don't go bad or get soft like almonds and other nuts do. Keep a jar in the glove box.

Next tip is water, water, water. I try to shoot for a gallon of distilled water a day. I know a lot of people don't see any reason for the distilled but since water is meant to pick up and carry away toxins and excess minerals your body cannot process it seems counter-productive to drink water full of minerals. The minerals your body needs should come from food sources and not from the water. Distilled water has the least amount of minerals.

As for finding a salad dressing with no starch, I've been looking for months with no luck. You can make your own though and it's good. Oil (not corn or peanut, I use canola), red wine vinegar, FRESH garlic cloves and onion (red or white, or both), finely chopped (a food processor works well). Add ground sea salt (available now in any grocery store by Schilling), black pepper and lemon juice. The lemon juice works as an emulsifier to help keep the oil and vinegar together a little longer after you shake it up. Put it into a tightly closeable glass bottle and it will last in the fridge for about 2 to 3 weeks.
Experiament with the amounts to how you like it. Add a little at a time till it's just right. Everyone has different tastes. (for those with strong taste buds you can add a little anchovy paste before you serve it but I don't think you should leave it in the fridge for more then a day or so. Maybe make a stock of dressing and add the paste as you need it)

Another good idea is to add some suppliments while your at it. There are a lot of natural suppliments that have anti-inflammatory properties. Such as flax seed oil, fish oil, and garlic.
Best of luck with this. If you need any help... let me know. I am feeling so good now I feel like laughing all the time!

Be well, Winona

Here is a recipe for the most wonderful salad dressing I know - my Grandmother (who lived in Switzerland for many years) taught it to me.

SWISS "FRENCH" SALAD DRESSING

8 servings

1 ts Salt
Fresh-ground pepper
1 ts Mustard
10 fl Olive oil
1 ts Sugar
3 1/2 fl Vinegar
1 Egg, or
2 tb Cream ( Add more if you want)
Stock (This is what gives this dressing it's special flavour - use vegetable or chicken stock)

Blend together all the ingredients except the stock or water in a blender or food processor until quite smooth. Add enough stock or water to give a lightly coating consistency. Put in a screwtop jar and keep in the refrigerator. Use within 3-4 days.

Paavo Airola wrote about the dangers of distilled water in the 1970's when it first became a fad with the health food crowd.

Distillation is the process in which water is boiled, evaporated and the vapour condensed. Distilled water is free of dissolved minerals and, because of this, has the special property of being able to actively absorb toxic substances from the body and eliminate them. Studies validate the benefits of drinking distilled water when one is seeking to cleanse or detoxify the system for short periods of time (a few weeks at a time). Fasting using distilled water can be dangerous because of the rapid loss of electrolytes (sodium, potassium, chloride) and trace minerals like magnesium, deficiencies of which can cause heart beat irregularities and high blood pressure. Cooking foods in distilled water pulls the minerals out of them and lowers their nutrient value.

Distilled water is an active absorber and when it comes into contact with air, it absorbs carbon dioxide, making it acidic. The more distilled water a person drinks, the higher the body acidity becomes. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, "Distilled water, being essentially mineral-free, is very aggressive, in that it tends to dissolve substances with which it is in contact. Notably, carbon dioxide from the air is rapidly absorbed, making the water acidic and even more aggressive. Many metals are dissolved by distilled water."

The most toxic commercial beverages that people consume (i.e. cola beverages and other soft drinks) are made from distilled water. Studies have consistently shown that heavy consumers of soft drinks (with or without sugar) spill huge amounts of calcium, magnesium and other trace minerals into the urine. The more mineral loss, the greater the risk for osteoporosis, osteoarthritis, hypothyroidism, coronary artery disease, high blood pressure and a long list of degenerative diseases generally associated with premature aging.

A growing number of health care practitioners and scientists from around the world have been advocating the theory that aging and disease is the direct result of the accumulation of acid waste products in the body.

There is a great deal of scientific documentation that supports such a theory. A poor diet may be partially to blame for the waste accumulation. Meats, sugar, white flour products, fried foods, soft drinks, processed foods, alcohol, dairy products and other junk foods cause the body to become more acidic. Stress, whether mental or physical can lead to acid deposits in the body.

There is a correlation between the consumption of soft water (distilled water is extremely soft) and the incidence of cardiovascular disease. Cells, tissues and organs do not like to be dipped in acid and will do anything to buffer this acidity including the removal of minerals from the skeleton and the manufacture of bicarbonate in the blood.

The longer one drinks distilled water, the more likely the development of mineral deficiencies and an acid state. I have done well over 3000 mineral evaluations using a combination of blood, urine and hair tests in my practice. Almost without exception, people who consume distilled water exclusively, eventually develop multiple mineral deficiencies.

Those who supplement their distilled water intake with trace minerals are not as deficient but still not as adequately nourished in minerals as their non-distilled water drinking counterparts even after several years of mineral supplementation.

The ideal water for the human body should be slightly alkaline and this requires the presence of minerals like calcium and magnesium.

Distilled water tends to be acidic and can only be recommended as a way of drawing poisons out of the body. Once this is accomplished, the continued drinking of distilled water is a bad idea.

Water filtered through reverse osmosis tends to be neutral and is acceptable for regular use provided minerals are supplemented.

Water filtered through a solid charcoal filter is slightly alkaline. Ozonation of this charcoal filtered water is ideal for daily drinking. Longevity is associated with the regular consumption of hard water (high in minerals). Disease and early death is more likely to be seen with the long term drinking of distilled water. Avoid it except in special circumstances.

I just thought you would like this info. My husband has a hissy whenever our dog drinks out of the fountain that uses distilled water. He says it depletes your body of the minerals ect. that you need.

Hi Cara,

Thanks for the water info.

Just wanted to add that standards for "spring water" are non-existant. I stick with reverse osmosis water. (and do suppliment)

Shaklee makes acouple wonderful home RO machines if anyone is tired of the high bottled water delivery prices.

Good Day,
ike

Hi Winona,
Thankyou for the encouragement I have seen the grape juice mentioned so often here and that of course is the one thing I forgot to get yesterday lol. I am heading to the store soon so will make sure to pick some up.

I found one dressing... but not sure if any of the ingredients listed are starchy or hidden starch.

It is Emerils House Herb Vinaigrette
ingredients are:
canola oil
balsamic vinegar
olive oil
minced onion
minced garlic(dehydrated)
spices
sun dried tomatoes(no sulfites)
salt
gum acacia
xantham gum

I also drink lots and lots of water. Especially since it had been so hot here.

Hope everything is going well with your new place.

Have a great day

Pam
