Hi everyone,

So after 4 wonderful pain free days, it's back. The NSD worked VERY fast for me, took about a week. But, then 3 days ago pain was back. Not as severe, but nontheless noticeable. I'm thinking maybe it's the icecream. I thought for some reason that was ok. It is the only thing I can think of. Perhaps the high concentration of sugar. Other than that the only thing beside meat, fish, cheese, fruit and veggies and nut (no peanuts or cashews) I've had is chocolate and I thought that was ok too. I've even given up yogurt! ( I do use milk in my coffee) (please don't tell me I have to give up coffee!) Any suggestions?

Linda

Linda,
You sound like me! I reacted VERY FAST to NSD then started to FLARE in my hips BIG TIME! I traced it back to MILK! And too much sugar.
Try your coffee with the non-dairy creamer. I LOVE the flavored ones and have no problem with them. I gave up coffee for a couple months, but now have one as a treat once a week!
Also try lowering your sugar intake and try to find dark chocolate without milk added. I haven't acquired a taste for dark so I have cut out chocolate. I can't believe I just said that!!
I also found Breyers has a YUMMY icecream that is lactose free. I can have it occasionally. It is their Vanilla Bean flavor and tastes just like the regular one. (That is IF I remember the old flavor correctly !)
I can have cheese that is aged, cheddar, parmesan, etc. Also can have occasional yogurt.
Hang in there,
Janet

Linda,

I give you credit for trying to modify your diet. The quick results may mean, as Janet suggested, you have identified a food allergy, e.g. lactose intolerance. If you are allergic to milk, then that means no ice cream and no milk in coffee.

BTW, the caffeine in coffee and chocolate lowers the body's blood sugar and long term use depletes calcium. I have seen recommendations to avoid caffeine to improve your health.

It is my understanding that if you want to reduce carbohydrates, you must avoid the consumption of table sugar, i.e., sucrose.

Best regards,

jcwinnie

Look for modified food starch in your ice cream. I can buy only the fancy-pants kind now, the cheap stuff adds starch as a thickener.

Hi Linda!

You might want to try goat's milk or sheep's milk based cheeses and yoghurt and see what happens. Most people who are taken off dairy are only taken off cow's milk based products.

Also, watch out for casein (a milk protein), as it's actually worse than lactose. My naturopath was telling me that many people who are diagnosed lactose intollerant may actually reacting to the casein in things. Just a thought.

Organic dark bittersweet chocolate is WONDERFUL mixed with raw almonds or dried fruit. One of these days I'm going to melt some and make my own dark chocolate covered almonds or cranberries or something.

And if you think that ice cream is one of the culprits, try Tofutti frozen desert. This is no word of a lie and I am an ice cream lover like you wouldn't believe (it's embedded in my genetic code as a necessity of life), Tofutti is downright amazing. Ice creamy texture, great flavours (Chocolate supreme knocked me off my chair, and Wildberry sent me into raptures), and about the same price as a tub of Ben & Jerry's or Hagen Daz (up here in Canada anyway).

And, um, my naturopath would tell you that you should never, ever, under any circumstances drink coffee (something about some chemical other than caffeine that causes massive problems). I still do, although I gave it up for a few months. I'll probably give it up again, but I'm resisting.

Good luck!

I agree with all you said Janet - dairy certainly is not good for me. I also discovered the dark chocolate thing which is great because I love it. Also its good to take with you places as a quick energy hit and well, doesn't it feel great to eat something quite "normal". By the way, dark choclate has good antioxidant properties so its not all that bad in moderation

Did you know that chocolate as a candy was invented by nuns on a South American island where the cocoa plant is back about 300 odd years ago. Because it causes an endorphin release, it makes you feel good when you eat it, which is why it's so popular ( especially to PMSing women). Well, the nuns became so involved in chocolate, eating it more than anything, that they became quite corpulent and were ignoring their regular duties as nuns, so the then pope had to ban them from chocolate.

This is a true story - although the details are fuzzy - I think I need chocolate.

Ha Kat,
I KNEW it was a woman who came up with it! I sneak some every once in a while but I sure feel it the next morning. Wish I liked dark chocolate, because I can't handle the milk. Anyone have a suggestion on another brand to try. I like the idea of a trail mix with nuts, dried fruit and DARK chocolate.

Hi Janet,

I absolutely LOVE dark chocolate and I buy the big bars and my husband and son sneak off with them. I have always liked it better than milk chocolate. At least there's something on this diet that I love, well that and ice cream. Now just to not overdo it
Your trail mix sounds wonderful.....
