I have read the sinus problems can be a complication from ankylosing spondylitis
I was wondering if anyone has ever experienced this .

Yes drastically improved on NSD. I posted on this quite a bit in the past.

I had sinus problems for two decades before strong AS symptoms developed. The sinus pain developed after a flood established mold in my basement. Now my sinuses are even worse!

I might have a chronic fungal/yeast biofilm infection in the sinus which is rather harmless in the sense that it isn't one of those death threatening black molds. But it could be a constant source of gut reinfection that maintains gut dysfunction and hence abnormal permeability. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3920250/pdf/toxins-06-00066.pdf

I recognize the authors in that article and some of them are employed at a lab that is well known for mold testing.

I have been tying to source food grade, 35% hydrogen peroxide to irrigate my nasal passages and sinuses in hopes to kill mold and other things that are causing pain. H2O2 seems to be a controlled substance in China.

An alternative is something called OMG Spray by Dr Fitt.

Other possible sources of sinus pain are:
  • inflammation in the cervical spine that is pressing on nerve roots causing referred pain up to the sinus (and even false trigeminal nerve pain). This nerve activation can even cause mucous to form in the sinus.
  • inflammation in the sinus due to AS

I had to eat only starch for three to five days before a GI exam -- I wasn't allowed to eat any roughage. By the third or fourth day I had horrible insomnia, such bad non-restorative sleep that it was torture, hyperactivity, the obvious stiffness and burning in joints and other connective tissue, and sneezing fits and a very watery nose!! Increased fungal activity from starchy food certainly can cause those nasal symptoms; I don't know what else.

I hope that helps.

Hi Fonzy,

I've had AS symptoms since 2003/4 with diagnosis in 2005. I had never had any sinus issues until just after Halloween 2015 - I remember it well, as I thought that maybe I'd picked up a second-hand sweet: there were a few snuffly kids trick-or-treating (and adults stopping by for a vino or two!). But when the infection started to appear every few months for the following year...

At the time, my forehead and cheeks would be extremely painful and there was a lot of ... material ... being produced at the back of my nose and throat.

I haven't had another instance for the past year, so it may well have been a bug I picked up, but it's food for thought. In any case, the inflamed sinus certainly didn't correspond with flares.

I'll look up mulehound's posts on this.

HLA B27 +ve. Localised pain in SI joints, lumbar and thoracic spine. No swelling. Eyes OK, peripheral joints OK. NSAID usage from 2005 to 2018, meloxicam.

Least favourite saying: No Pain No Gain.

2005 - Diagnosed after two years of debilitating SI pain, early 20's
2017 - Waitlist for rheumatologist in Ireland=14-months
2018 - Seeking alternatives

My sister is on remicade and had chronic sinus problems. She just had sinus surgery and she told me she feels like a new person. She regrets not having the surgery done sooner. No clue if it is from the disease itself or from the medications we take. My mother in law told me XLEAR nasal spray works well for her sinuses. She has cancer and had sinus surgery about a year ago.

I only wish I had as good a result from my sinus surgery. They cleared my sinus out and straightened out the deviated septum. It was all a waste of time as my sinus problem was as bad as ever in a matter of days. I was offered surgery a second time to try and correct the problem. I just said thanks but no thanks.

So sorry, didn’t know you already had sinus surgery. If it were me, I think I would try oral antifungal treatment with very low sugar diet for six months. My doc at Mayo told me it can take six months on fluconazole to really kick out fungal infection. Have they taken swab of your nose to see if you still have infection? If you decide to have surgery again, I would go to a different doc because different doc, different technique.
