Has anyone used essential oils with any success? Some are supposed to reduce inflammation and some are marketed to reduce pain. Don't want to waste my money on snake oil though.

Ok. YES. I feel so strongly about getting this information out there I created a login just because I wanted to respond to this question.

DoTerra. The word means "gift of the earth". It's an essential oils company, expensive, very high quality. "Therapeutic grade". Its a multi level marketing company and I really didnt want to have anything to do with it at first. But then I started using the oils and I could talk about it a long time, it has changed my life a little bit but as it relates to this question and AS...

I got AS diagnosis officially last yr (29 yrs old) but have had iritis since college days, I've maybe had it ten times, more frequent in recent years.

I got a bout of it about a month ago. I dropped Frankincense under my tongue. 3 drops 3x/day. IRITIS IS GONE.............

Ive never had it go away without immediate steroid intervention. If I don't go to the doctor immediately and get prednisone I am in a world of pain. It can blow up in 24 hours.

So to discover this was awesome.

The FDA is not a big fan of companies like Doterra and Young Living because essential oils are so effective and they are not regulated pharmaceuticals... The FDA has not approved/evaluated any claims for the oils. It is "non compliant" to make any drug claim about the oils. I am not allowed to say here, for example... Francensense can down regulate an iritis flare. I can only say, IN MY PERSONAL EXPERIENCE, FRANCENSENSE TOOK CARE OF MY IRIRTIS.

I have heard of people mixing lavender (cools burns...) and cyprus (assists circulation, movement of fluid...) with the frankincense and rubbing it around the eye instead of the drops under the tongue... and this being effective as well in de-flaring inflamed eye.

But here's the important part. These companies have only been around a short time. Essential oils have been around for centuries. Ever since people first began distilling them. But they are not found in nature like that. These are extremely potent, concentrated compounds, and you can definitely hurt yourself overdoing it. (Harm the liver if too much taken internally, burn the skin topically, etc.) I would steer clear of anything near the eye unless you had the guidance of someone who knew what they were doing. Fortunately there are Doterra reps everywhere nowadays, but I would get guidance from a doctor (MD, NP, DC, NP, whatever your flavor) first.

One other thing, most essential oils companies have fillers, trace amounts of unhelpful stuff. I used to think I was allergic to lavender until I found the line I use now. It was not lavender I was reacting to, it was the cheap version of it I had been using. It is very important if you want to try the Frankincense thing to get high quality. Happy healing everybody. laugh

Thank you Josephine, your information is encouraging. I have tried Panaway and Copaiba from Young Living for pain twice now. It seemed to help somewhat. Have you had any experience with the brand Organic Infussions? Their prices are more reasonable. They claim to be organic and therapeutic grade. I can't seem to figure out if they are of similar quality as Young Living or DoTerra. What kind of fillers are in the other brands?

For the record, there is no outside regulation on the marketing claim "Therapeutic Grade". Just want to say that as a disclaimer. Use at your own risk, with guidance of an experienced herbalist.

I only company I have experience with is DoTerra. I could write pages here... Check out this blog, great place to start http://mountainroseblog.com/8-things-you-should-know-about-essential-oil-facts/

Hi wait,

Young Living oils has been a life saver for me for 17 years now. I can't even begin to tell you how much of a difference they made for me. PanAway in particular has been one of my favorites, but the reality of essential oils is that different oils will work for different people - we are all individual. Young Living carries only the highest quality therapeutic oils, so you have made great choice there. I am not familiar with Organic Infusions, but I checked the site and they state "100% Pure USDA Certified Organic Therapeutic Grade Aromatherapy Essential Oils" and they also say "Organic Infusions understands that when aromatherapy essential oils are altered by artificial means, the precious essence of those oils is forever changed. For this reason Organic Infusions does not carry essential oils that have been diluted, altered, or synthetically modified." So it looks like you are not at risk for adulterated oils. Josephine is right though, regulation is lax, so you do have to do your own research to be sure you get high quality oils. The reason PanAway is so expensive is because it contains oil from a VERY dry plant, Helichrysum, which requires a huge amount of plant material to produce a small amount of oil. Helichrysum is in the blend because of it's very potent pain killing ability. As with most things in life, you may have to experiment to find what works for you. I just got a back rub from my husband with a bunch of YL oils, and I am feeling better right now. Not good. But better is such a blessing.
P.S. I have been absent from this site for years, I just noticed a very old post of mine is still here:

Not claiming a cure. The last year has been kind of crappy, but the oils still keep me so much better than what I would be without them. We have to measure everything on a scale. I still sleep well, I still am able to pursue an active life, though working as a web designer certainly does have me sitting still MUCH to much every day. Sorry for rambling... Just so interesting, given my history, that when I return to this site after so many years, I immediately found a thread on essential oils smile
