If you want to use this QR code (Quick Response code) just save the image and paste it where you want. You can even print it and use it that way. Coffee cups, T-Shirts etc would all be good for the QR code.

Do the kleb bacteria feed on sugar also or just on starch? What about other bacteria? Do all intestinal bacteria feed mostly on starch?
Also, on LSD and NSD, is maple syrup allowed, or honey? If both are allowed, which is the better choice?
Thanks, Barbara

Me and many of my low/no starch friends don't eat starch, refined "corn/cane/beet sugars", agave, or dairy/lactose. We believe klebsiellas and candida love all that stuff way too much.
My safe sugars are: honey, maple syrup, coconut nectar, coconut crystals, dates, figs.
Others will surely disagree, (as I have seen lots of sugary recipes in the recipe forum and in Carol Sinclair's book) and that is cool, it might be a little different for everyone? This is just what works for me and quite a few others I have met along the way.
I wouldn't touch refined sugar with a 10 foot pole. It flares my gut issues up horribly, and will cause my gut to go haywire for a week. Nasty stuff in my body. But I eat natural sugars in the form of raw honey, dried fruits and dates every day.
(I also don't eat sweets after meat. #1 rule of food combining eat fruits first, you can google "food combining" if you are interested in this approach for a happy gut & easy digestion)
As for your other question, on all other gut bacteria needing starch, nope there are trillions of other bacteria in my gut getting along just fine without it!

I'm now a KICK AS (and Kick IBD) success story!! After going low starch Paleo to heal my gut, I can now eat nearly all starches, grains & foods without inflammation, flare-ups, or pain. I used a modified SCD diet approach (minus dairy! plus cacao ♥). Cheers to healing & thriving again! I blog at http://www.forestandfauna.com/about/

Yes, Betty, as you say for me is the opossite, y just can eat 1 portion a fruit a day. Honey, dry fruits is terrible for me. Is the fructose culprit?, a bacterias feed fructose?

Hello, Barbara:
Klebsiella loves sugar, but so do we and if we ingest normal amounts of sugars, these are absorbed long before they reach the region of bacteria, so they cannot feed upon this source.
NSD/LSD Honey is better than maple syrup (which is too often adulterated with caramel a really bad polymerized sugar that acts like a starch for us), but both can be problematic if candidiasis (yeast overgrowth), for example, is present. This pathogen is responsible for many insidious-onset cases of AS; it causes permeable gut that leads to AS symptoms.
Sugars are safe usually, once the candidiasis has been addressed, but this can take a lot of time and even more effort than the NSD!
Yes, there are other bacteria that love both sugar and starch and nearly all of our intestinal flora thrive upon resistant starches; some of thee do bad things to us: Rosacea, psoriasis, and speculations about many other symptoms.

I find it absolutely vital to clarify that regular honey and raw honey have two very different actions in the body. Raw honey seems to be okay in small amounts and is even safe for diabetics. You know it is truly raw if it is not golden, by the way. Regular honey acts just like cane sugar inside the body.
Same is true for maple syrup. The real thing comes from cooked down sap. Grade B being the best. I do pretty well with it as long as I don't use it daily; once a month is okay (but I also deal with systemic candida.) All those other so-called maple flavored syrups are chuck full of nasty, fake ingredients and sugars.
In answer to the original question, I would choose raw honey, hands down.

Thanks everyone for great answers. All very helpful! I conclude that for me I'd best avoid both starch and sugar, at least for the foreseeable future.

John, does sugar absorb before it reaches the small intestine? I have sibo, so bacteria in the wrong place, earlier in the digestive process. I think I remember you saying sugar absorbs in the stomach. Is that right?

Hi, Barbara:
We absorb most of the sugar in our stomachs, even prior to duodenum, but sometimes fruits can be problematic, as there can be residual sugar in the pulp.
Most of us have dysbiosis and Klebsiella pneumoniae is the most common displaced bacterium, as it is a survivor even in acid conditions.
But sugar even when absorbed early enough in the digestive process, can increase candidiasis activity.

Ditto most of the past comments...
I generally do not have issues with sugar, except for the times I had issues with candida. Then I had to eliminate it for period of time.
That being said... with my normal diet, I do not eat a lot of sugar. I will have fruit 1-2 times a day and yogurt. I will save Sunday or Wednesday evening some times for another "treat" like a chocolate or ice cream.
Never drink sodas now, just not worth it.
I also be sure to supplement with bacterial friendly foods.. natural sauerkraut and organic yogurt.. I think this beneficial bacterial helps as well.
Best to you,
Tim
