Has anyone else felt much better after taking vitamin C? I'm amazed how much it can knock my pain down. Does anyone know why?

Vitamin C helps the immune system and so can help stop a flare from coming on.
My rheumy put me on vitamin C.
Its not a cure all by any means, but I do think it helps me stay a bit healthier.

Spondyloarthropathy, HLAB27 negative Humira (still methylprednisone for flares, just not as often. Aleve if needed, rarely.) LDN/zanaflex/flector patches over SI/ice vits C, D. probiotics. hyaluronic acid. CoQ, Mg, Ca, K. chiro walk, bike no dairy (casein sensitivity), limited eggs, limited yeast (bread)

Because its all about the immune system. Autoimmune diseases are an immune system not functioning properly. Anything that helps the immune system function better, will help.

There's a myth about vitamins that's been around for a while. Read the following page, here's an excerpt: In October 2011, researchers from the University of Minnesota found that women who took supplemental multivitamins died at rates higher than those who didn’t. Two days later, researchers from the Cleveland Clinic found that men who took vitamin E had an increased risk of prostate cancer. These findings weren’t new. Yes, I have heard that Dr. Max Gerson had his patients take vitamin c, aspirin and 50mg of niacin to alleviate pain in his patients. He called it The Gerson Triad.
Diet change has improved my RA. I feel best eating raw veggies and some fruits and avoiding grains, sugars, nightshades, beans and dairy. Timo, have read the same thing. I have a PCP who says that we don't need extra vitamins because everything we eat is vitamin enriched. Not if we eat the way we should. My surgeon has me taking a Multi-Vitamin, Calcium and D. My D stays low so I always take it and Calcium. About a year ago they added Co Q-10 because supposedly it adds back something that treating your cholesterol takes away. I do take some C also. I have read the stories where the high dose IV-C have helped people but I am not going there.

Various cancer studies where they thought the antioxidants would help the cancer patients and instead the opposite occurred and they had to stop the studies. The understanding is that oxidation kills cancer cells so antioxidants help cancer cells along. But its complicated. Its not a one size fits all. Oxidation also can trigger cancer. Antioxidants can be both good and bad. The way I look at it for myself is that if I were 100% healthy, I'd just eat a healthy diet, get plenty of exercise, water, sleep, and rest. But I have health problems and there are some things that when I've added them in, per my doctors' advice, I felt better. The magnesium and vitamin C probably being the most helpful. I do read everything I can, especially opposing views. Then try to sort it out. But too, I tend to rely on my own experiences. If I try something and feel like it has helped me, I keep it. Being well aware that while it may make me feel better, it may also have some negative side effects. To me that's no different than the meds I take. Its all about weighing the pros and cons of each thing. Drugs have their place, Supplements can have their place too. Its all about balance, IMO.
