Hello guys, hope you're all having a great week. I just have one question. Yesterday I had for lunch a big portion of salmon with salad and steamed broccoli. Pretty safe foods. At least that's what i thought. Some hours later I started having a flare on my right sacro joint. Then i found out the salmon I have been eating for quite a while now is farmed raised from Chile. I read a bit about this and it seems that farmed raised salmon is quite inflammatory and full of other bad stuff. Can farmed raised salmon/fish or non-organic turkey/meat make you go into a flare? Do I only need to eat wild salmon and grass-fed meat? If the salmon/turkey was grain/soy fed, is it really bad? Thank you so much for your help!!

In my opinion yes! I steer clear of anything but wild caught fish or the occasional grass fed beef. Plus life is just better for everyone - animals & fish included - outside of factory fish/turkey farms, etc. I personally look at it like this, sick meat equals sick human. The soy, corn and chemicals given to factory farmed animals leads to inflammation for the animals as well, and I don't think eating inflammatory meats is good for anyone. I'm now a KICK AS (and Kick IBD) success story!! After going low starch Paleo to heal my gut, I can now eat nearly all starches, grains & foods without inflammation, flare-ups, or pain. Anything smoked or cured is a problem for me. So I avoid smoked fish / salmon, smoked chicken and cured meats like ham or bacon. I don't care so much about origins of fish or meat, although have a preference for grass fed beef over grain fed, but unsure if latter really causes a problem.

Might just be the steamed broccoli. I thought cooking it brings out starch. I always ate it raw.

I have gone into a flare with ground turkey and then it made sense after I read all the junk in it. I do not know enough about salmon, but you should try another kind that is not farm raised and see how you feel.
Diet change has improved my RA. I feel best eating raw veggies and some fruits and avoiding grains, sugars, nightshades, beans and dairy. Does the broccoli really release starch when cooked? Even sauteed? Steamed?

I am no expert on all things starchy, but cooked or raw broccoli has never been a problem for me.
Though I have found it's cousin, cauliflower, can be - and seems to be more so when cooked. Some cauliflower tests okay, while other times it tests pretty starchy.

Thanks! Broccoli is one of the only veggies that work for me. My diet consists of broccoli, leafy greens and celery, everyday, with a choice of protein. It's pretty strict, but Im afraid to try any other vegetables!
