Hello everyone!

I have had AS since I was 24 (am now 42). During the last 5 years I have been troubled with groin pain. I initially thought I'd strained it, but since it never seemed to go away, thought it more serious. After numerous xrays, scans and trips to various doctors, it was decided that since it wasn't a hernia it must be due to AS. All the scans (MRI, Ultrasound and CT) came back showing nothing. They may of course be right, but I do feel like I've been fobbed off. The pain was cronic for about three years and has come and gone since. The reason I query their diagnosis is that it seems to be triggered by certain activities, then flares up. Driving is the main culprit. I sometimes get a pain/strange sensation on the inner thigh, but the majority of the pain presents itself in the groin. I understand what referred pain is, but can it appear in the groin even when there doesn't seem to be much pain anywhere else? I have the most trouble with my right SI joint, the same side as the groin, so this theory might follow. I did have the right SI injected but this didn't seem to do much good. I have since started Humira and have found my general AS to be improved, though the groin is still somewhat of a problem.
Anyone else experienced this? Is this likely to be caused by AS?
Many thanks!!!
Bill

I haven't had that pain, but I've heard others on here talk about it.

PT might be able to help it. They helped just about all the other musculoskeletal issues I have had.

My groin pain is from my hips as well. It flares and it settles. I sometimes get steroid into the hip joints which helps settle them. When I am flared I can't drive, because it is my right hip that gets really bad, and I can't put pressure on the gas pedal. I would try Physio therapy and then ask for a steroid shot.

Hi Janet

I did have some physic and a steroid injection into the SI joint, but neither did any good. How can you tell if it is your hip causing the groin pain?

Oh Bill, I have had terrible groin pain for the past several years. The pain management dr. said it was from my back. I haven't had one bit of that pain since my surgery 5 weeks ago so evidently it was.

My rheumatologist did an MRI. He said sometimes it is hard to tell between hip and back pain.

Best wishes!

I get the groin pain and have been told it is from tightness/inflammation in the "hip flexor" or iliopsoas muscles - I just try to do regular stretching on the hip flexors and sometimes get a physio to do some soft tissue work on it. Hope that helps!

Hello, Bill:

Absolutely caused by AS; a manifestation of what could properly be termed periostitis.

Yes, AS presentation is fully capricious and different from one patient to the next; some will have IBS mainly and others neck and shoulder pain, even aortitis--silent killer!

HEALTH,
John
