My husband and I are faring well at the moment, but I know that soon, in the next few years, we will have to get someone to help me around the house. I have a young son and I must take naps. I'm fused and need someone to assist me. I don't really know what or where to look. Also, before my whole spine fuses, we plan to have another baby ~ so if I'm on a walker like my last pregnancy, I will definately need help. Any suggestions?

Hi Peachy,

I just finished replying to your reply to my post in the S.S. forum so you know a little about me already. I just have a suggestion because of some research I have been doing for myself. I have been trying to figure out what I could go to school for or do after I get on S.S. again, Lord Willing. Well I was checking out vollenteer groups to see what might be available for me to do and maybe be something that would lead to employment. Anyway if you don't have enough friends and family that could help start checking out the vollanteer organizations in your area. If you live in a big community there should be something. I know my Mom had someone comming to help her before she died, but I don't know what the oganazation was.

But don't worry yet, like a guy once said we can burn that bridge when we come to it.

Sorry bout the spellin, Steve

HI PEACHY
You might try church organations. If you are having children you are a very strong person.AS makes us view life better than most people. We all have to look for differnt ways to do things. Our children dont care if we have AS they only care that mom and dad love them. Some times things just go are way if we pray alittle.keep going no matter what.

ps i have 3 boys agrs 22 and 20 and 18 .would not change my life with AS.

Hi JustPeachy,

I've been MIA for a few days, so I havn't had a chance to say hi to you yet. Welcome to the KA family. Glad to have you aboard. I think the two avenues listed in the prior posts are what I would recommend. Good luck!

Take care my friend

Hi Peachy,

I tried to add this to my post by editing it but it didn't stick.

I am sure I have more time than you right now, if you want I'll try to check for organizations in your area on the internet, just let me what area you live in.

Blessings, Steve

Just an off-the-wall idea from a student's perspective... Do you have a spare room? If you live anywhere near a university many a responsible college student would jump at the opportunity to help out around the house and run errands in return for a room to live in and a corner of the refridgerator. I don't suppose you live in Florida?

This may not be much help, but......

I just learned to let some things go. It's not the end of the world if the kitchen floor is not clean, the dishes washed, or the laundry done. And sometimes it's just a matter of finding another way to do things. I would be lost without my sponge mop. Picking up things has to be done by someone else. My kids have always picked up their own stuff. When they were young, I kept their toyboxes thinned down to just what they played with most. Then it was easier for them to put their stuff away. When I'm in a bad flare, my hubby does much of the housework and the cooking when he gets home from work. Tough on him, but we can't afford a maid. I hope you find someone to help you. When your children get older, they can help.

Hugs,

Cindy

Here is a suggestion on finding help around the house. Call your local Red Cross. They offer courses on babysitting and would be able to give you a list of names for sitters. I just called on Monday for myself and was given 10 names of 14 yearold girls that have completed the course. I myself was looking for a "mother's helper". Someone to keep am eye on the kids while I tinker around the house or take a nap. So far I have 2 good candidates. Or if you just need help with chores I would run an ad in the newspaper and hire someone to do household chores.

Take care.
Cara

How Do Peach, My hobby is wood-carving, and I have a friend that carves nothing but Peach Seeds. Its amazing how many different things the guy can get out of such a small thing. He is fantastic.
Now for the help thing, perhaps this is a long shot but the BSA [boy scouts of America] could be of help. I have a couple of neighbor boys that are about to complete their Eagle Scout. The have a number of community things to do on a volunteer basis. For instance last year they had to do something to help someone in the neighborhood that has a disability. They chose Me as their project and mowed-weedeated and did general yard work for me ALL summer. They couldn't take any money for their deeds, and their reward was the merit badge. It was a recipicial thing they helped me and I helped them...........Its worth checking into, perhaps the Girl Scouts have something in the nature of helping around the house in order to earn badges.

Thanks a lot for the advice Steve, sorry it's taken sooo long to respond, but I couldn't reach this page from the downstairs computer...don't know why. There are lots of organizations here, however, they are "reserved". I don't quite fit the elderly catorgory, I am not mentally handicapped (although some would beg to differ ---hee hee). I was a social worker and tried to find anything out there for me...came up with zilch for both hip replacements. But I am nothing if not diligent and somewhat "hard headed". Take care and Chat ya later...JP
