Oh my gosh, you are going through a lot and my heart goes out to you. I don't know if this is helpful, but I'll just share that sometimes for me, a flare up can happen even when my diet is really good. Stress, too much activity, and so on, also getting sick from a virus -- all these things can trigger a flare up. So, try very hard to have hope, enjoy your meals and snacks and try to do your best and let go. Easy for me to say, not easy to do but I try. I can't control everything, I try to accept that!

Hi MSK!

I wish there was more I could do to help!!

As for the curcumin, one bottle will be plenty to see if it helps you, has 200 capsules. It was referred to me by and older fellow with AS. He has been eating NSD for 6 years, plus taking the curcumin tablets throughout the day. He just had a check-up at his doctor with no signs of present AS activity, no inflammation. He also recommended drinking tart cherry juice twice a day, and there are proven studies tart cherry juice helps lower inflammation and battle arthritis.

Also, I believe you are doing the right thing with a simple diet, and I would recommend keeping all dairy and eggs out of your diet until you get you pain levels down. Then you can see if they effect you for sure. I am totally intollerant of dairy, even in homemade 24 hour yougurt, it's about more than just a lactose intollerance for me. But many report feeling better from bone broths, and they shouldn't negatively effect you. I would just be sure to steer clear of pork. Also, you want to find ranch rasied, grass fed beef if you can, as studies are showing how inflammmatory grain/corn/soy feed beef is. But overall, for me adding animal products was not necessary at all for my personal healing. I do enjoy fish and seafoods on occasion, but I never eat bone broth, eggs, dairy, ever, and it hasn't stopped me from getting better!

I will let you know if I can think of anything else to suggest.

I fully agree with everyone that stress can be a total trigger for a flare. Stress can be just as damaging as starch. I hope you are able to get a full nights sleep, but assuming the pain is preventing it. Are there any drugs you can take to help you get a full nights sleep? I have taken non-perscriptin Tylenol PM, to help me sleep on occasion, and never regret doing so!

Please keep us posted, as we are thinking about you!!

-Andrea

I'm now a KICK AS (and Kick IBD) success story!! After going low starch Paleo to heal my gut, I can now eat nearly all starches, grains & foods without inflammation, flare-ups, or pain. I used a modified SCD diet approach (minus dairy! plus cacao ♥). Cheers to healing & thriving again! I blog at http://www.forestandfauna.com/about/

Oh, I wanted to suggest a meal that might be more similar to the foods in Turkey, only guessing, have never been! For all of my testing with iodine, the sunflower seeds come back no starch, they never change color or turn dark for me. And if sunflower seeds don't agree with you, just sub in another nut or seed.

Raw Falafel:
1 cup sunflower seeds (w/o shells)
1/4 cup nutritional yeast
1 clove garlic
1 teaspoon cumin powder
1 teaspoon coriander
sea salt & pepper
3 Tablespoons water
1/3 cup fresh herbs, parsley, cilantro, scallions, or mint

2 Tablespoons hemp seeds and/or sesame seeds

Blend first batch of ingredients together in a food processor. You will likely have to stop & scrape down the sides a few times. Just be careful not to add too much water, as you want this mixture to be firm. Roll into small falafel balls and coat with hemp seeds or sesame seeds. Serve with fresh tahini & cucumbers.

Served with Fresh Tahini:
1/2 cup ground sesame seeds (or tahini)
1/2 cup water
Juice from 2 lemons
2 garlic cloves
1 teaspoon ground cumin powder
Pinch sea salt

Blend ingredients together on high in a blender** Serve with raw falafel, or as a dressing on a Greek Style Salad. I like to eat with greens, fresh herbs (basil, cilantro, parsley), and sliced cucumbers, home-pickled red onions. I am currently eating this meal ALL THE TIME!

**if your blender doesn't fully blend down the sesame seeds, then just use tahini (already ground sesame seeds)

Hi FormerFoodie,

By safecarbs, do you mean fruits? And how much was better for you?

Revisiting the diet makes sense in my case. Because i feel like at first meat was ok for me but seems to be problematic for me. But as you can see my diet is pretty much limited anyway so i dont know if i can remove meat or anything else for that matter.

As for meats, i eat them with little spice sometimes. and calcium is powder and tested safe.

I would think the tahini would be most safe for you. Sesame seeds are loaded with calcium and other important nutrients. They always test no starch for me.

If you are unsure on sunflower seeds, I guess wait until you feel a reduction in pain. The nutritional yeast may vary on where you get it, some might have a small bit of rice flour added. I eat that stuff all the time though, no problems.

We've just got to figure out which foods you body is reacting the most too. For me if I were to have a bit of tomato, hot pepper, pinch of cayenne spice (used to be tolerated), organge (though I can eat grapefruit all the time), or dairy products, my day would and night would be absolutely runined. Just horrible inflammatory gut pains that are hellacious. There might be one food in your current limited diet that is causing a lot of your pain.

I personally find no problems dates or figs. They are a great source of energy for me. I also use sunflower seeds daily for things, often replacing other starchy nuts like cashews or dairy products with sunflower seeds. Last week made the most incredibe "sunflower Ceasar salad dressing" with garlic, capers, salt, pepper, sunflower seeds, water, a little oil, lemon juice.

Are you getting any guy pains in reaction to what you eat? Or are you more suffering from joint, back, muscle flare pains?

How funny, I meant "GUT" pains as in stomach pains! But accidentally typed "guy".

I was wondering if you are feeling stomach pains in reaction to foods, or more overall body pains, nerve, joint pains?

Sorry for the typo!

I haven't had any bad AS, joint, body/nerve, pains in quite awhile. Lately all that flares up is my gut. My gut has foods it loves, foods it likes, and foods it HATES. It is never shy about telling me which foods it HATES, as it gives me so much pain when it does.

Hey I was just thinking the same thing it seems to be my gut that gives me trouble now rather than anything else (other than a sore head) and it never did before.
I was wistfully thinking that it was the last part of the healing process. Everything is back to where it finally originated and about to go away for ever! Would be nice wouldn't it.

Love the recipes smile
