I've recently had a second flare up of what i believe is uveitis. Can anyone describe in their words what this pain feels like to them!?
I think, as a relatively new diagnosis of AS I am uncertain of the whole thing, despite reading and reading about the disease. My eye pain has been incapacitating the last few days. The eye aches and the bones around it feel like they're gonna push out of my face, constantly. Followed by a dizzying headache that creates phenomenal nausea. But, the eye pain is one of the worst, incapacitating pains I have felt (and I have SI jt pain and rib pain.) Please help me relate these complaints with the diagnosis.

Thank you,
JennyMay

Is there an impairment of your vision, like cloudiness? Mine usually has cloudiness followed by 'flare' which takes on a cloudy white appearance but not always great pain. The first time was the most painful for me.

Yes, it's, not terribly cloudy, but cloudy all the same. I have mild photophobia with flashers and floaters. As well. I just want to relate the level of pain it inflicts. Can it be really so ridiculous that being vertical feels implausible? And being horizontal with ice on your face can't really subdue it?
I'm sorry for your discomfort as well! Pain And loss of vision are the last things we deserve in this world! I do appreciate someone who understands, something to relate to!

Hi, JennyMay:

IRITIS: Hot icepick being slowly inserted into eye with an unsteady hand kind of sensation. Constant tearing and extreme photophobia--can't look at any light of any intensity. Extreme eye-socket pain and orbital peripheral pressure.

Keeps me on the straight-and-narrow, diet-wise. Last episode 15 years ago and telling someone else that was too recent. "Important AS Resources" in my signature has some suggestions; get rid of this condition FAST.

HEALTH,
John

Is your eye highly sensitive to light, or changes in light? Is it red and does it feel like there's something in there? Does looking at the monitor create a knife-like pain such as John described above?

Regardless, if you suspect something like anterior uveitis, get in to an eye doctor quickly and/or get a referral to an ophthalmologist ASAP. This isn't something to wait around on as untreated uveitis can be very bad.

I'm not trying to frighten you, just urging you to act on this instead of waiting for answers from us. Please do get an appointment ASAP.

Warm Hugs,

Kat

I have an ophthalmologist I'm seeing Friday. I'm on oral prednisone QD right now, which helps. The weird thing is, my photophobia is mild. I can walk around normal for the most part, just sudden changes are the only dramatic impact. But, the ice pick sensation is constant and my eye socket feels like it could explode.

HI, yes, I know the pain of uveitis. I am sorry you are having pain and suspect uveitis. What I've learned: treat a suspected flair as an emergency and get on pred forte (steroid) eye drops immediately. Don't assume your eye doctor knows about proper uveitis treatment especially for people with uveitis. It is no disrespect to them, but it is just they don't have the necessary experience.
uveitis.org has a lot of support and information as well as a list of specialists.
Best wishes.

Don't wait til friday, get to the ophthalmologist ASAP. Treat it as the emergency that it is. If its uveitis, you'll need steroid eye drops now, not in a few days.

I've only had dry eyes, that I know of. When my eyes started bothering me, I went to a ophthalmologist just to have it checked out, better safe than sorry. Now that I know this level of pain is dry eyes (which I only get when I flare), I know its not the more serious uveitis.

My stepfather with crohn's gets the uveitis. He uses the steroid eye drops.

Best to catch it and treat it early!
