I agree

Sue you should be taking Metformin if you can tolerate it. You should also have your blood sugar checked when you have had a medrol pack. I would be very concerned with the amount of oral steroids you are taking and being pre-diabetic. My doctor told me when I was pre-diabetic, to lose weight which id did and clean up my diet but I still got it. My rheumy says 99% of prediabetics become diabetic when on steroids.

thanks janet,

i'll tell both my GP and rheumy this.

So far, after a year of being on steroids for a week every 3 months, my fasting blood sugar is back up into the prediabetic range and my ha1c is still around 6. but if its a ticking time bomb.........well, i'll talk to my doctors.

Does this apply to short bursts of steroids or just taking it long-term? I usually have a burst once or twice a year for my asthma.

Hi Gals,

He said that pre-diabetics become diabetic with steroids. I had them a couple times per year.

Thanks Janet,

I will bring this up with my rheumy when I see him next.

For a multitude of reasons, its gotten to the point of me asking for Humira anyway; hope he's still on board with that.

I'm gonna make a laundry list of activities I've come to avoid just to be able to live a reasonably productive life. Hoping that helps.

But we digress....

Hi Sue,

I know In Canada I don't have extra drug insurance for biologics, but we have a government program which will pay for biologics. I first have to meet the criteria, which includes changes in my spine, which I have and I got Enbrel before. I am going to apply again, I am just too sore in my hips and ankles. I am really hardly walking anymore. The Enbrel gave me terrible insomnia, so I quite it. I will try humira I think.
