Hi guys,

Just wanted to report back on my experiments with Amylopectin (ie. glutinous rice flour).

= the good stuff =
Making pancakes gave me a huge huge boost in energy and stamina that would last all day. Pancakes were made with about 7 heaped teaspoons of glutinous rice flour, an egg, and water. Pretty yummy.

If anything any small lingering inflammation was improved whilst eating these pancakes.

= bad stuff =
Eating too much sticky rice would make me very sleepy.

I know this seems totally counterintuitive to my experience with the pancakes, however the quantity is quite different (7 heaped teaspoons) versus with sticky rice (1 or more cups). I figure my body can deal with a certain amount of fermentation but any more than this and things start to shut down.

I did repeatedly eat pancakes and sticky rice at different meals and it was a very reliable observation that sticky rice made me sleepy whereas pancakes made out of glutinous rice flour did not make me sleepy.

Also in the pancake it may be that the egg being mixed in is significantly changing the nature of the fermentation, and hence a different effect on my energy levels.

= the ugly =
Damn you candida. Once it gets away on you it is so hard to stamp out. I'm sitting here eating yoghurt with coconut oil mixed in; nearby a pot of lemongrass tea and a bottle of Pau d'arco capsules; meanwhile I have covered the effected region in antifungal and even taken a bath in Methy Blue (which seemed to work ok). All these are calculated attempts to beat Candida. Here I sit contemplating my next move in this game of Chess with grand master Candida as my bloody opponent (very bloody indeed).

Here is an interesting thing - no matter how bad the Candida worsened it did not make my AS worse. However I will reserve judgement on Candida and its relationship with AS until I have thoroughly kicked its a$$.

Oh.. I should add that I also had huge problems with normal rice causing candida long ago when I started slowly cutting out starch. I cut out white rice and the candida went away (as did dandruff which was also caused by candida). So it isn't just glutinous rice and I can expect the exact same issue with normal white rice.

Glad you had some pancakes.Last week I was mixing coconut flakes and real, warm, maple syrup together to make a treat for myself.
I was reading about a diet by a doctor from France, named Dr. Seignalet, and he had great results with his patietnts that had autoimmune diseases. His diet allowed rice and quinoa, but excluded all other grains. It worked for AS,RA, lupus , chronic migraines, etc.

Diet change has improved my RA. I feel best eating raw veggies and some fruits and avoiding grains, sugars, nightshades, beans and dairy. Sed rate dropped from 65 to 19, but it took over a year.

Might I suggest as your next move to try to balance the immune system.

You would need to get the Th1 branch to kick in to deal with the candida. This article has LONG list, maybe too long. It seems as though reishi might do a whole lot for that. Vitamin A, although it seems too simple, is good for it, too.

Hey I woke up this morning and realised I may have made a big mistake in blaming amylopectin / glutinous rice. I had been eating this for months without issue (started eating sticky rice around May based on my old posts).

What I realised this morning was that the candida issues only started a few weeks after I started eating lots of Bananas!!! I recently started putting Bananas in smoothies with yoghurt, adding them to pancakes, and snacking on them at work.

Sorry guys!

*sigh* I tend to agree. So easy to misattribute these things unfortunately.

So for now I will put the blame on bananas.. Time will tell if amylopectin was a contributor too. I know white rice gave me a lot of trouble years back before I went strictly no starch.

OK, I can definitely say that eating too much of this will cause problems with Candida.. as much of a problem as rice I would say. Fortunately it only takes about a teaspoon or two to give me a whole lot of energy for the day and lift my out of a dark lethargic, wooly headed hole.

Oddly, when eating glutinous rice in small amounts I actually feel far healthier, mentally more acute and with less stiffness and more energy than normal. For me that is a nail in the coffin for the "candida causes AS" theory that a certain Naturopath mentioned to me.

And lo.. I now see that good ol' Ted has visited this very same topic many a year past:
