I received my OAT lab report today, which included a test for oxalates. The normal reference range is 6.8 - 101. My test came back waaaaay off the charts: 316 !!!

The OAT report also indicated a possible Candida infection, and some other issues, too. I'll be going over the report with my doctor this afternoon. Looks like I've got a very long road ahead of me to slowly clear this toxin out of my body. No more spinach for me!

I have always not paid much attention to the oxalate posts but your last discussion caught my eye. its very interesting as going NSD can automatically increase your intake of oxalates by the very nature of the limited list of foods.

I had fantastic results within four days of going NSD and then not so good part of which will have been not testing foods and hidden starches but other issues have arisen that werent there before NSD. I am now begining to wonder if my increased intake of almonds as just one example could be causing these issues. I also noted that oxalates causes symptoms on the left hand side of your body and a lot of mine when I have any are on the left side very rarely the right.

Keep us posted on how you are getting on in clearing the toxin and how you do it!

Sundance,
I hope with your new labs you will get to feeling better. Take care.

Diet change has improved my RA. I feel best eating raw veggies and some fruits and avoiding grains, sugars, nightshades, beans and dairy. Sed rate dropped from 65 to 19, but it took over a year.

Thanks for asking, Violeta. Well, as I mentioned, it's a very slow process. I'm having to gradually reduce the oxalic content of my diet, in order to avoid severe detoxing reactions. It will probably be another couple weeks or so before I reach a "low" oxalic diet of 40-60 mg oxalic acid/day. This is from a starting diet of 700-1,000 mg/day!

Meanwhile, I'm trying to figure out exactly what I can eat. I had such a good reaction with my PsA to the AI Paleo diet, that I don't want to give it up. But adding oxalate restrictions on top of it limits my diet even more. So it's real learning process.

Unfortunately, I can't just go on the diet and start feeling better! My body has to release its stores of oxalates, which it will probably do irregularly and suddenly over the next couple years or so. So I will periodically feel much worse, and only gradually start to improve in between "dumping". Right now, I'm "worse". And I'm slowly learning about which supplements might help the detoxing process.

GrumpyAlly,
I noticed when I ate too many almonds I did not feel as good as when I ate less of them. However when I have read up on diet cures from sources like Mercola's RA diet prtocol, I think he mentions to limit the nuts eaten, I ae read it other places too. I don't know about the oxylate issue either, maybe??
Take care.

Hang in there, Sundance. Good for you on being patient and taking it slow. If you look at the possible symptoms oxalic acid poisoning can bring on, yeah, it's better to just take it slow.

I know what you mean about not knowing what to eat. I'm right there, too. I've made a few mistakes over the past week, but just from cutting out the turmeric, celery, curry paste, potatoes, and tamari, my brain is clearing out and I have more energy. Also, I didn't realize that coconut water and milk have a good amount of oxalates, too! The funny part is, though, that I have pains all over the place that come and go. It can really get me down, to tell you the truth. I've been eating an uncoventional diet, mostly white, except for the butter and cheese. I was going to say that the day before yesterday I started eating apples, but they are peeled, so they are white, too. Well, I started cooking them with cranberries, so now my apple sauce is red. I bought some brussel sprouts(low oxalate, but high goigtrogen!) and chicken for tomorrow so I can have a meal with my family. I already started taking votes in my head for whether or not to eat some mashed potatoes:)
Since you have the patience to take it slow, maybe you will be able to avoid the severe dumping symptoms. I hope so.

Take care,
Violeta
