Been on this diet for three and a half months now. And the diet I've done is complete no starch. When I say no starch, I mean not a single bit. It's also been lactose free, low sugar, and low fat, which means I've hardly been able to eat anything.

My everyday diet has been pretty much almost always this:

morning:
lactose free yogurt

lunch:
salad with maybe some egg and chicken in it and low fat starch free italian dressing

dinner:
fruit smoothie, can of tuna, glass of lactose free milk

snacks: raisins, baby carrots

So, unfortunately the diet failed for me. I don't feel any better than I did before the diet. If anything, I feel worse. I'm not saying this diet doesn't work for other people, but for me, it did absolutely nothing.

I'll be starting remicade probably at the end of the month and hopefully that gets me where I want to be. At least I gave the natural route a shot. If I had seen any improvement whatsoever I'd stick with it. Sure the diet is restrictive and it doesn't let me eat a lot of the foods I like. But, honestly I could care less about eating the foods I like. The diet just hasn't done anything

Mike - know others are going to pop in here, but, for some persons trying the diet, they need longer than 3.5 months. Remember reading of 9 months before good effects felt! In addition, did you use the iodine method to test for the starches? Carrots are starchy... You need to start with testing *all foods - at least that is the recommendation. Also, raisins. Need to be organic raisins, and ensure not 'preserved' with palm oil (a usual), and also nitrates and for some brands a whole lot more. These two could be upsetting the apple cart.

Hope that you can solve the whys of this and hope it is just, for you, a longer process to see NSD working effectively.

TAke care -

Yes, I have a bottle of iodine with me at all times. I have 5 bottles total. 1 at work. 1 in my pocket. 1 in my kitchen at home. 1 in my bathroom at home. And then 1 I gave to my Fiance so she can check foods too.

I have heard it can take as long as 6 months. However I expected to see at least some progress by now. I haven't seen anything. I feel worse. Carrots are not starchy. and they are good for your digestive system. Raisins aren't starchy either

Everything I buy is organic. If a food has a gum in it, I don't eat it. If it has any kind of chemical in it, I don't eat it. I have been extremely, ridiculously careful.

Unfortunately there comes a time where you have to say this isn't working and move on to your next option. I'm not happy about it, but I really think that time has come.

Hi Mike,

Great Job on giving it your best shot!

I just want to throw this out there! Dairy, no matter what kind gives me joint aches. It's the CASEIN protein many are senstative to, not the lactose.

http://www.livestrong.com/article/557532-joint-pain-caused-by-alpha-s1-casein-protein/
"Various conditions can cause joint pain, including arthritis, infectious diseases, bursitis and muscle pain. Food allergies can also cause inflammation and joint pain, according to the Center for Food Allergies. Consuming alpha SI casein may trigger joint pain or arthritic symptoms if you are allergic to the protein. These reactions can occur hours or even a day after consuming the casein protein, which can make it difficult to diagnose a milk allergy as the cause."

Before you toss in the towel, you might want to switch you daily yogurt & milk for coconut milk, almond milk, etc. Just avoid soy.

Also, for me it was around the 5 month mark where I really started to feel better. I think it honestly just takes time for the body to go from an inflammatory state of "fight or flight" mode to an relaxed, non-inflammatory state, as it all happens on a very small celluar level.

xoxo

I'm now a KICK AS (and Kick IBD) success story!! After going low starch Paleo to heal my gut, I can now eat nearly all starches, grains & foods without inflammation, flare-ups, or pain. I used a modified SCD diet approach (minus dairy! plus cacao ♥). Cheers to healing & thriving again! I blog at http://www.forestandfauna.com/about/

Hey betty,

Ya I had heard about casein. I had an allergy test which showed I wasn't allergic to it though. Not sure how reliable that is, but lactose and fat free milk is a really good source of minerals, calories, and protien for me. If the allergy test showed that I was allergic, I would have excluded milk from my diet.

One thing I am doing, I'm going after dust mites. My allergy test saw a lot of antibodies to them. So I've gotten more agressive with my room cleaning. Before i was doing things like vacuuming and washing the sheets once a month, now I'm doing it weekly.

And even if I do start the remicade, I'm not sure if I'll quit the diet. There is a part of me that still wants to give it its shot. I just don't feel like I can go any longer without some better medication.

Excellent - you are taking all the precautions (though had heard that carrots are starchy - I like em but don't really eat em much).

Betty has given good advice re the milk prtoducts. Now give it longer - wait for John's input. This is his area of expertise. (Possibly he is caught up with voting). Please wait for his input. As Betty said, 'don't throw in the sponge yet'. OK?

According to the little starch chart we have on these forums carrots have .3 grams of starch per 100 grams. That is hardly any starch. I've tested carrots myself too and they've always tested ok.

And ya, I might not quit the diet, but I do feel its time to start the biologics.

Mike, along with the casein possibly being a problem as Betty said, did you test the lactaid milk with iodine? Even though there's no lactose, there is still the digested lactose sugars, galactose and sucrose. Did you notice that lactaid tastes sweeter than regular milk?

Violeta, the lactaid is one thing I have not tested. And yes, the lactaid definitely has a sweeter taste to it. I'll test it as soon as I get home.

One thing about eating yogurt and drinking milk that I am not sure of is if it makes your body acid or not. Being acidic can really cause a lot of problems. There's a type of pH corrector called pH-Basic that contains pH testing strips.

There are a lot of different things to tweek with diet that can make the biggest difference. Just as there are a lot of different things about each of us that can make one diet work for one and not for someone else.
