Hello , hello, hello!!!

Christmas 2010 , walking a with walking stick. terrible pain at lower back especially sacroiliac joints.

January 2011 , beginning of no starch diet. After 3 months of restrict diet i lost 13 kilos ( from 78 kg to 65 kg ) and the pain has gone.

Today , i got 8 kg back, eating forbidden stuff and start feeling pain. starting the diet again.

junk food everywhere. how can you avoid that? pain always reminds me when i am eating s**t!

like many members, i forgot that i have AS !
Bloody bread, chocolates and chips!

Costas

the pain comes and goes but definitely has to do with what i eat or drink

Hey, Costas:

It is good to see You again.

Sometimes, "experimentation" with starches can be fun, but seldom worth it in the long-run!

The reason so many of us are adamant the diet works is that we have had that round-trip ticket many times already and know it is not just the variation of the disease activity, but it is something we are provably in control of!

Hang in there; we are here for support.

HEALTH,
John

Thanks for your update!!

I have been at this for a little under a year, and am convinced low starch/no starch is the way for me to be too.

But everytime I go back to feeling like a rawk star for too long, it seems I slip up by eating a food that doesn't agree with me, even if it is starch free. In the most recent case it was being reuinited with my old friend "soy". I was at a hot springs resort the past couple days soaking up the mineral water and 3 prepared vegetarian meals each day. Unfortunately, at this place, that means lots of soy. Tofu scramble, miso soup, soy yogurt. All so good for only a short time, before the pain sets in the next day. What a way to ruin all that relaxing I did!!

The last time I was there I indulged in tempe (fermented soy) and told myself, never again. Well that lasted for a few months at least!

(Note: I do still use tamari (wheat free soy sauce) with no problems, but any solid tofu, miso, tempe always troubles me unfortunately.)

I wish you luck on your starch free journey!

-Andrea

I'm now a KICK AS (and Kick IBD) success story!! After going low starch Paleo to heal my gut, I can now eat nearly all starches, grains & foods without inflammation, flare-ups, or pain. I used a modified SCD diet approach (minus dairy! plus cacao ♥). Cheers to healing & thriving again! I blog at http://www.forestandfauna.com/about/

Hi Betty smile
Just thought I could share my experiences with you:

>> Tofu scramble, miso soup, soy yogurt

Tofu: safe. I never react to traditionally made tofu. But maybe they scrambled it with soy?

Miso soup: Fringe (not for everyone). Caused mild/moderate pain at first then gradually body adapted to the point that it no longer causes pain at all. So well have I adapted that it is now one of my "healing foods".

Soy yoghurt: Not safe. Ever.

Tempe (fermented soy) : Unsure. I think I reacted to this in the past. All that resistant starch is likely to not be fully fermented yet.

Hey Zark,

Good to know!

I am not for sure what it is about soy + me that doesn't equal friendship. I am guessing it is because I have read around 90% of the soy in the US is GMO ("Round-up herbicide ready") Or maybe after my body has consumed so many different soy fillers in products over the years it just finally had enough. But I keep relearning the same leason, that I just need to totally avoid all soy excpet for a little bit of tamari (wheat free soy sauce) and I can live with that!

Though I would love to be able to consume some miso someday again wink

I try not to drink too much coffee, but when I indulge in the occasional iced latte, the local coffee shop now has hemp milk, and it makes the most awesome lattes. I totally avoid all soy milk too. Usually just get an "Americano" (espresso, water, ice) if they don't have almond or hemp milk.

xoxo,
Andrea
