marb : This has now become tedious - made me point. Case rests.

'I' do not use swimming pools - up to others what they do. We each have our free will and choices. Mine choice is 'no' swimming pools nor hot tubs, nor spa pools. And can assure you that, 'my' choice, from my own free will, will in no way deter others from following their own free will and free choice.

Yes, but what is the purpose of this thread if not to plant the idea in the minds of others that there is a significant risk in swimming in a pool, with no real evidence to back that position up?

Especially in a community of people which could almost universally benefit from spending time in the water, whether it be swimming, wading, performing aerobics, or what have you. For many people with AS the water is the one place they feel free and there is no need to fill there head with needless worry - people suffering from chronic pain have enough to worry about.

Not irrelevant - highly relevant - having seen one swimming pool in UK closed for a year last year. Contamination. Rather nasty.

As for the chlorine, precisely. V. bad for eyes, especially IF have problem eyes... Check ophthalmology papers. No, you can do your OWN checking. Since you soooo object to my citing research papers/articles!

As for remaining sedentary - one does not have to be swimming or otherwise 'remain' sedentary. Ridiculous.

One does not 'plant' ideas. One points out the risks attached to public (and pvt as well as) swimming pools. The information is public knowledge - or perhaps you would rather NO ONE knew of such. Perhaps you would also rather keep under close covers side effects of medications. Like a fellow spondy here in my area. Now got liver damage from NSAIDs, yes, serious liver damage.

No. People must not know, anything. Brush under the carpet. BAH!

My point is there isn't much to brush under the carpet in the first place. Side effects are shown to be significant through studies. Are there any studies that show that it is more risky to swim in a pool than, for instance, drive there? Did anyone actually get sick from the UK pool you remember?

"Citing" involves more than just listing a huge number of tangentially related articles.

I'm not trying to antagonize you, I just don't see the risks. If we are citing anecdotal evidence, I was a competitive swimmer for 12 years, I lifeguarded and taught swimming for 5 years at 4 difference facilities, I was sometimes responsible for keeping the pool safe and clean and not once did I hear of anyone getting sick from bacteria in the pool.

IF that is your arguement, then you do not have an arguement... Like that fella in the 'health' food store here who opines that Aspartame in supplements (that he sells by the way) is no more dangerous to health than going out on the roadway... <Shakes head>

I suppose that is an unoriginal argument. But until you show any sort of evidence that the bacteria in public swimming pools is any significant risk, I don't think people need to weigh this upon their minds. As was already said, no point living in fear, especially when the risks aren't even clear. I have made my point, good day

Wow is all I can say! Molly hear is our #1 research person and has provided so much viable information and we all make our own decisions. She isn't trying to push anyone into anything. She spends a lot of time researching and to me that is very, very commendable. It has helped a lot of us. I for one appreciate all that she does to help us.

Thank you Pea -

marb: Yes. That was why the pool was closed. Closed for a year. Grand children of my friend use it. The local schools, every week. When over in the UK I chum my friend. The pool has now been reopened - much to the delight of the children who are v. good swimmers.
