Hey Sue, just a thought. Are you eating 5 or 6 small meals every day, or doing the big 3? If you aren't already, you might considering eating a ton of smaller meals which will help your blood sugar levels stay constant, as well as making is so you are never famished when you eat.

Love the walking inside idea. Don't know that I could do it myself. For me, I have to be outside when at all possible. In the winter, I have the elliptical/treadmill at the gym. In the summer, it's outside all the way. Although this year, with the tendon and muscle issues in my right shin, I'm not doing as much walking. Something about, my physio needs to progress a little more before I do as much as I'd like. Can't take my dance classes this summer either. (we really do need a 'Louis the Lip' pouting emoticon - hint hint hint)

Anyway ...

Hugs,

Kat

hi kat,

been "grazing" since i was in college....noticed that kept my blood sugar constant even that far back whereas i'd be nearly comatose after a "big" meal especially if i hadn't eaten in a while. then when my gastritis kicked in, even more important to eat a little bit frequently.

but, you are right, "grazing" is supposed to be a much "healthier" way of eating.....so long as it doesn't come out to more calories total.....

as for the walking, i'd much rather have some woods to walk through or a nice garden or a pond to walk around or better yet, live on the beach and walk for miles in the surf, but if i were to walk outside around here at work, it would just be concrete and buildings for the most part.

fortunately, i live in a more rural setting and the walks at home are much nicer....fields at least, birds singing, flowers blooming, berries to pick.....

thanks,

sue

hi john,

looking over this post again, sometimes people's answers make more sense in hindsight.

after doing a lot of reading, i started eating salmon or tun every other day and starting eating at least 20 oz of nuts every day. and the complex carbs have been nearly eliminated from my diet. let's see if this and exercise do the trick.

Carbs, especially refined carbs (rapidly absorbed sugars and starches), affect triglycerides.

I'd suggest reading Dr. Davis's blog. He discusses natural ways to control triglycerides.

http://heartscanblog.blogspot.com

Search on triglycerides and you'll have a raft of postings to read.

thanks,

i'll read the link.

i had already eliminated all refined carbs, i think that's why my fasting glucose fell from 110 to 96 between 2002 and 2006. but i had gotten to a point where even good whole-grain lots-of-fiber carbs seemed to be causing issue (that "blood sugar isn't quite right" feeling and the "no matter what i eat, i'm still hungry" feeling). so i've eliminated most of them as well. the American Diabetes Association says these kinds of carbs are OK, but i've read other sites that say different. all i know is that i feel the best after i've eaten a meal containing vegetables and nuts or an egg or fish.... work in progress....

but i'm curious as to what that link says, so i'll check it out.

i just looked at the blog and i'm pretty sure this is one of the sites that made me realize, eliminating as many carbs as possible and upping the fish / nuts / flaxseed along with the exercise was what i was going to try to lower my triglycerides.

I once had high triglycerides. After I began eating low carb high fat it dropped and is now very low. It also helps to work out regularly.

thanks smile

forgot about this old thread.

i am now on a low carb diet (almost no complex carbs, limited fruit), eat nuts every day, and walk every day, and also started fish oil in the spring.

my last triglycerides reading was 104 smile

nice to see that diet, exercise, and supplements can actually fix something smile

Hi Sue,
We have to watch our meds too. Gas-X says on the insert that it may contain "medium chain triglycerides".
http://www.gas-x.com/pdf/GasX_softgels_drugfacts.pdf

Equate's (Walmart brand) generic equivalent doesn't have that warning.

I'm sure there are other meds out there that can effect our triglyceride and cholesterol levels too.

Take care,
James

I was up around 300 but cholestoral was fine. I have been taking Niaspan about a year and that brought it down almost immediately. I tried fish oil pills first and that helped but didn't bring it down enough. If you like fish I think omega 3's help but I prefer my red meats and a cocktail so I guess I'm stuck with the Niaspan.
