If you want to use this QR code (Quick Response code) just save the image and paste it where you want. You can even print it and use it that way. Coffee cups, T-Shirts etc would all be good for the QR code.

I have had minor hip pain before and it would usually go away. In the past week I have had increased pain in my right hip. I find it hard to lift my right leg and a shooting pain occurs in the hip when I move a certian way. What have you found as an effective treatment? What should I apply cold or heat? Thanks
Darren

Hi Darren, My hips have gone from completly normal to the most painfull part on my body, making me have lots of trouble walking in a matter of weeks. I am now using a cane to help with walking. I have found that heat gives relief, but you might what to try the hot/cold treatment (alternating hot and cold to increase blood flow). My massage therapist told me that it is very important to self-massage your si/hip/pelvis area several times a day to keep blood flow as good as possible and delay major hip problems. I hope that this is just a short term thing for you that will go away. Take care my friend Daniel Keep on keepin on Kicking some AS
Take care my friend,
I hope this finds you well,
Daniel

Hi Darren! I don't think we've met, so "Hello!!" As for the hip pain, it seems a lot of us suffer with that one, and it is a newer symptom for me as well. I've been dx'd with AS for about 8 years, but this past Nov. was when my left hip really started to act up. The discomfort and pain isn't any fun, and can take me off guard if I move incorrectly ever so slightly I too am looking for the MAGIC solution of relief, but haven't found it yet I know many suffer and I haven't heard of too many people finding much help. What did your doc say? As for heat or cold, I guess try what feels best for you at the time. I also sleep with a pillow between my knees, I'm a side sleeper, and that seems to help. I hope you find what you're looking for, and welcome!! Laura

Well, Hip pain is very common with A.S.. I, myself, am needing dual hip replacements, but I am putting off the surgeries because of my age in relaion to how long the replacements last (10 years tops). So I am very familar with the hip pain issue. Here is what I suggest: Whenevr My hip gets to the point you are describing, I make a trip to see a doctor. The doctor needs to x-ray the hip if this is recurrent pain. And the doctor can give you a localized shot of steroids which will take care of the pain for quite some time. The steroid shot seems to be the only thing that gives lasting results. A heating pad gives some temporary relief if you can get it in the right spot. Also you may ask your doc to perscribe a "hip Kit" mobility aides. They include a clothing aide, a long reacher with a claw, Sock aides, long handled shoe horn, extended toliet seat and Rails, and some other items. These items make a large differnce when in all that pain. Somedays it just doesn't pay to get out of bed.

Thanks for the posts. I have had the pain for 4 days now, hopefully it will go away. I have an appointment with my doc in a couple of weeks(I am going to try to fit in sooner). This pain is new to me and I am not enjoying it in the least.

Hi Darren, I started with hip pain about 10 years after AS first started. The only thing that seemed to provide some temporary relief was to soak in a hot tub and flex the hip through the full range of motion. Sitting still for long periods of time would really cause it to hurt. I since have had both hips replaced. The first one when I was 39 and the second at the age of 52. I had the first hip redone when I was 53 so I did get 14 years out of it and I know of some others who have gone 20+ years with an artifical hip. Hopefully with the newer meds you will find something to prevent joint damage and get some pain relief.
