My thoughts are with those in Christchurch, or with family and friends there. I hope everyone's loved ones are safe, and that they haven't suffered too much damage to property. News on it here and here . Amazingly, no reports of fatalities at this point.

Had a worrying couple of hours last night until able to contact people. And now gale force winds are forcast... Just what they don't need! frown

Used to live in NZ until 10 years ago, and got good friends in Christchurch. Haven't heard from them, but assuming that if the city is in a state of civil emergency that phones or power may still be out in places andthey will just be getting on with it. Hope that is the case anyway. NZ has a pretty good civil defence service so things should move fairly fast in the clean up.

Oh my. That is really bad. The brick structures were the worst off, from what the photos show. Ugh. They will have a long restructuring time ahead of them.

Prayers going out to all affected.

Anyone heard from Kiwi (Chelsea)???

cemc, It sounds like phone and power has mostly been restored in the city, not sure about water. Only 2 seriously injured, so likely that your friends are fine. The civil defence system is good, and people have been helping one another out, which has been great to hear. I still can't believe that there weren't more seriously hurt, or anyone killed. Can only put that down to the time of day it happened, had it been during the day I imagine that there would have been many casualties from the centre of town.

Donette, I think it will take a while to clean up. So many brick heritage buildings have been damaged, and there will probably be efforts to preserve the character of them which will slow things down. Chelsea is in Auckland, which hasn't been affected, so will be safe.

I was thinking about our NZ members this weekend, too, but had no internet access. I hope everyone is well.

Warm hugs,
