Kava absolutely rocks! It gives you the "mellows" of a fine wine or a great smoke while not causing a feeling of intoxication or obtunded consciousness.

Grrr...how about valerian? Hold your nose (it smells like a really gnarly tennis shoe), take 300 mg in capsules or so, and see if it works for you. The active ingredients go straight to the same receptor sites as diazepam (valium), but, again, without the bad side effects you don't want.

Don't take it with alcohol or other sedatives.

I use it occasionally for a muscle relaxant. Apart from some possible drowsiness, there are no known negative side effects, it's not addictive, and it's not subject to tolerance or abuse.

Kava got the bad press because a dodgy company in Europe used aboveground parts of the plant in their preparation, not knowing those parts are severely and quickly hepatotoxic. Preparations of any kind using only the root have never been implicated in a single case of even mild liver damage. It has caused a sort of psoriasis in some South Seas Islanders, but they were drinking massive amounts of kava tea from sunup to sundown daily for years.

Any and all of these are just suggestions, of course... I am not prescribing.

Sunnypower, that is indeed my late buddy at his best. Beautiful animal, even though this picture makes him look like he's had a couple vicodin. That's our unanimous favorite picture though...even got posted to "Lolcats".

The baby is my grandson Ezra at four months with his then best buddy, Uno. Uno is a huge "mutt" male cat and the sweetest, gentlest cat I've ever had. That's a good thing; at eight months now Ezra crawls at high speed, and Heaven help any kitty he gets hold of. They'll be dragged wherever Ezra wants them.

I am the MIB.

Thanks, Lisa. Those are beautiful little ones you've got.

Motor was a very distinctive character-- the "Marley" of felines. Nobody can ever convince me animals have no soul.
