Went out with my wife just to get out and about and take care of some business (Motor's Cheyenne sendoff). After shopping I went to drive my mobility scooter up the ramp and into the van.

The scooter popped a wheelie, slamming the back of my head into the asphalt seven feet below. My back was mostly saved by the chair back; my head took pretty much the whole impact.

I'm okay...I think.

After losing my cat buddy and my brains in the last forty eight hours I'm afraid to find out what's next--they say bad things come in threes.

I hope so. I'm feeling a bit loopy. Not sure how I'd cope.

Hi Johninco,
Man what a way to ruin your day. I don't even know if this is possible, but I would try to think of a way to make portable handrails for your ramps. Make them out of chains (or something) for something to grab onto. Is this a cargo van or is this a customized van? I ask because there might be something on the net that might help and still be affordable.

They also sell wheelchair lifts and hoists for this purpose. Expensive I imagine, but I think it would drastically cut down on slipping and falling.

Can you make it up the ramps in reverse? That might help alot too.

Take care,
James

Nope. My ramps are two 2x6s with metal on the ends. In order to avoid it happening again all I need do is dismount the scooter and roll it up under power while standing beside it.

This accident happened through my own stupidity--I should never, ever have tried to ride it partway up a twenty four degree incline. The scooter is already topheavy to the rear; my 240 lbs put the center of gravity, in my estimation, about five inches above my waist. It HAD to go over backwards, and it did.

It's a 2000 Olds Silhouette minivan with no modifications whatsoever. My MD is trying to get me more substantial means of getting the scooter into the van through the VA.

With the death of the most awesome cat I've ever had yesterday this was just the icing on the cake.

Hope your week gets better. (At work, we get upset with people who say 'it can't get any worse' because something else will surely happen). So I'll leave it with hugs for a better tomorrow.

Thank you, Rumble. I learned not to say that YEARS ago, along with never saying, "It's too quiet..." Just like in every John Wayne movie, saying that brings all the Bad Guys pouring in from over the horizon.

I have a great question for Medical Science:
Why do traumas always hurt worse the next day?

My spine and shoulders haven't hurt this bad in a very long time. Fortunately my skull is intact, and I'm no more obtunded or obtuse than usual.

You have a good day too.
