Someone might correct me on these as still new to the iodine testing and not that thorough (so test yourself also) but

Cream Cheese - Nancy's cultured cream cheese seems fine
(Carol Sinclair in her book says avoid Philly Cream Cheese )

Turkey - Oscar Meyer goes black round edges - Hormel Natural Choices I think is okay (but can't remember if tested properly)

Some of the better long time testers can probably give you more info.

Best Wishes

Hell YEAH! Do a quick search in the diet forum and you'll find many posts about the unreliability of cauliflower.

It's totally bizarre. On some ocassions I have bought it cooked it and tested it and it's totally fine....absolutely no reaction from the iodine and no reaction from Jon eating it either. We like it mashed....like mashed potatoes yum! Next time I buy it from the same place and it tests black black black! So black it's nearly blue. I read something online somewhere (sorry that's kinda vague haha) that it has to do with how long it's left in the ground before harvesting. The longer it's left the starchier it gets.

So IF you are going to risk cauliflower unfortunately you are going to have to test it each time even if buying from the same place each time. Sorry!

ajt575: i tested philly just to see and yep, turned nearly black. ill check on the things you mentioned. thank you.

kiwi: good to know! boy that cauliflower pizza crust looks flippin good!! in addition, in sinclair book she mentions on pg 79, 80, or 81 about cooked veggies [cauli was one] develop a type of 'sugar' that could be what caused a problem. now my cauli tested fine so im gearing more towards that 'sugar' as my prob. thanks for your reply.

i forgot to add cottage cheese on my list and theres no edit button? hmmm.

The only decent sugar-free frozen desserts use stevia. As far as I know, homemade is the only way to achieve that. Saccharine is possibly not a problem, but I'm not sure because it has mostly fallen out of favor with manufacturers thus haven't had any in a long time. Nutrasweet and splenda are pretty terrible stuff and especially for someone trying to beat a serious illness (could find references with more details if needed). It seems like the sugar alcohols (sorbitol and xylitol etc) mess with your digestion and I don't do so well with them. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sugar_alcohol

BUT, if anyone does find a commercial starch-free frozen dessert sweetened with just stevia... I would be very interested to hear about it!!

There are 2 very good brands of turkey that I can find at health food type stores (e.g. Whole Foods):
* Heidi's Hens
* Applegate Farms
They are pretty expensive but the ingredient list is nice and simple and they taste really good.

Dairy-free chocolate bars are not hard to find; there are a bunch of dark chocolate bars at my local health food store that qualify as dairy-free. Cocoa beans naturally contain starch, so chocolate does have starch -- though some people do fine with the small amounts in pure chocolate. It's a small percentage compared to candies containing really starchy stuff like wheat or peanuts.

My family got me a present of some sugar-free chocolate bars sweetened only by stevia, which taste bittersweet but quite genuine (no funny artificial sweetener taste that I can detect). They are not starch-free however, so I break them up into little chocolate chunks and only have small amounts at a time. If you are interested in those sugar-free chocolates then I can try to pry out the secret of where they came from wink

I think Nancy's cottage cheese (another health food store brand)is ok, except I don't like the taste. I'm not used to cottage cheese being that sour -- even though I used to eat sour cream by the spoonful, and now can eat my thick creamy plain yogurt the same way wink

Oh yeah, if you do manage to get stuff from a health food store, look for Organic Valley Neufchatel cream-cheese-like stuff. That passed the iodine test when I tried it.

If it means that much to you, then maybe it's time to invest in one of those frozen dessert makers! I am lucky enough to have one on loan from my mom, and have already made (and consumed!) my first batch of home-made frozen yogurt made from home-made yogurt cool2

My frozen treat was flavored with orange oil and sweetened with a combination of some glucose sugar and some stevia, and I didn't notice any problems from it. Planning to make another flavor this weekend smile

Good question; thanks for starting this discussion!
Through the specific carbohydrate diet, I learned how to make my own yogurt. It was so much easier than I had thought it would be. Just a few extra steps and wow, homemade fro yo:

I love this kind of chocolate. The roasted soy powder never bothered me, but heads up about that ingredient just in case:

I love this kind of chocolate too:

P.S. sorry one of those links don't seem to work well. It was for Chocolate Dream chocolate bars which I found through the Sunspire website.
