Hi All,

I have been attacked by Iritis. My first bout with this disease.

My GP has asked me to put drops of "PRED FORTE (EYE DROP STERIOD)".
He gave me the following regime.

1 drop every hour daily for 1 week then,
1 drop every 2 hour daily for 1 week then,
1 drop 6 times daily for 1 week then,
1 drop 4 times daily for 1 week then,
1 drop 3 times daily for 1 week then,
1 drop 2 times daily for 1 week.

I am trying to stick to my NSD as much as possible.
Everything was going fine but then this came along.

Could anyone of you share there experience of taking this medicine.

I am in severe pain in my left eye at the moment.

Thanks.

Hi, nasaa:

Be careful with these drugs; they can lead to glaucoma!

Best to get bad stuff through Your system--take some physick and do enemas if You can. Salt and soda, coffee, or other but if You have sulfasalazine some several grams of that in the final 'retention' fluid.

I have used Depo-Medrol drops that helped very much, but not in over ten years since starting NSD/antibiotics.

Whatever it was--perhaps a milk product--you need to get it out of Your system quickly and get back to strict diet.

Don't let it go on for more than four or five days; this is YOUR eyesight!!

Send me an email if interested in my iritis regimen,
HEALTH,
John

That's basically what they had me do, prednisone, and then more prednisone, followed by prednisone...

An ophthalmologist should be testing your eye during this process, doing a pressure test, to make sure that it isn't reacting badly to the pred forte

since the pain is severe, you should be seen by an ophthalmologist, not just a GP, so you don't have the same story as me, because I wasn't treated aggressively enough in the first few weeks of my iritis attack, and it got worse

do you have light sensitivity?

Hope you can get it under control quickly, it can be a scary thing to experience!

I'm sorry. Iritis sucks, and can really hurt...

I've never taken Pred, I've always been on a different steroid drop (Maxidex), but I know it's commonly used for iritis. One thing I have heard about Pred Forte is that it's important to really shake the bottle well before putting in a drop!

Did the GP diagnose you or did you see an ophthalmologist at all? If the pain hasn't started to improve by Monday at the latest, get to an ophthalmologist - you may need dilating drops too. These relax the muscles in the eye and thereby take away a lot of the pain, but more importantly can reduce the risk of the iris sticking which could lead to complications if the inflammation is severe. Slit lamp microscopes are needed to really look at the level of inflammation in iritis attacks, which is why ophthalmologists are required as GPs simply don't have the equipment!

The regime in general sounds good, although you're on hourly drops for quite a while - steroids need to be tapered slooowly - I'd even hang on an extra week at the end on 1 drop daily. As this is your first bout though, I'd suggest that you get your eye pressures checked - when I used to get treated through the eye clinic at the local hospital, they'd get me back in after a week or two to make certain that the pressures were fine and the inflammation was settling down. Eye pressures increase with some people whilst on steroid drops, which must be managed, I've fortunately never had that problem although it's something we still check now.

All the best - I hope the eye responds quickly to the Pred - let us know how you get on.

-Anke

Guys thanks a lot for your quick response.

I am sorry for not writing in detail.

Yes, I went to see two opthalmologist and they both did all my tests like split lamp test, pressure test etc.

And yes I am also taking a eye dilating drop.

John I have mailed you asking for your material please!

I will try to get rid of all the wrong stuff out of my system now. I guess I was going a little too much on dairy and fruit juice. I am going back to my all protein diet for some time.

Timing is so bad! I have recently started a new job and the pressure is too much to do certain certifications. It is so hard to look into screen with this in your eye mad

I will keep you guys updated on this.

Thanks!

hi nasaa,
i've had 4 severe uveitis (aka iritis) flares in the past 4 years. (for 3 of the 4 flares i was also put on an extended dose of prednisone pills.) the first flare was VERY scary. i was in mexico and by the time i got back to LA, the situation was borderline blinding. (it was my first flare so i didn't know i should have seen an eye doctor immediately...i hadn't even been diagnosed with AS yet). i still cringe when i look at the photo that the opthamlogist took of my horribly swollen red eye. i couldn't even read the big 'E' on the eye chart.

anyway, now i'm a pro at knowing when a flare is about to creep up. i take a bottle of pred & cyclogyl (dilating drops) with me EVERYWHERE. my worst fear is being stuck on a plane or stranded somewhere without drops.

glad to hear that you're seeing an opthamalogist.

i was told to take lots of vitamin C (like 3,000 to 4,000 mg daily) as well as fish oil (3,000 daily) during flares.

i'm very open to alternative therapies. i even tried acupuncture around my eye when i felt a flare coming on (it didn't prevent it). however, with the uveitis flares, i go straight for the 'big guns' (i.e. pred drops).

be sure you shake the pred bottle really hard before you put in the drops....something to do with the steroid liquid suspension.

hope you feel better soon.

I have noticed a reduction in my eye inflammation which occurs only when I sleep while on this NSD. The other night though when I drank some whiskey in maui I got a bit of a flare.

I've had eye surgery from this condition. It helped immensely. The surgery was called a PDK I believe and it reduced the symptoms by about 80 percent.

I'm so sorry and hope you are already starting to feel better. I've had several flare ups of this. Like you, I am prescribed the pred forte, which is prednisone, steroid. Like others have said, shake the bottle well. Make sure your hands are clean; steroids make you more prone to infection. Take your time with the drops. Rest as much as you can and eat well, try to reduce stress. Nice timing, eh, with a new job? Congrats by the way! Soon you'll be well in no time. www.uveitis.org great support and information also www.iritis.org Mike is amazing and so helpful at both sites.
Again, sorry you've got to deal with that, hopefully the pain will subside very soon! Make sure you have a good follow up plan. For example, my doctor has prescribed me the pred forte to have with me at all times. If I start to flare I start treatment immediately, and that helps nip the flare in the bud. Then I see the eye doctor the next day, as soon as possible. This helps me get on and off the pred asap.
Take care,
Jan

Hi Guys,

Thanks a lot for all the information.
I am feeling much better than Day 1. Redness in eye is pretty less. Some pain is there though. I am sticking to a very strict NSD. I do shake the bottle pretty well before use.

John, I wanted to do the fast but I am not sure if I will be able to cope up with less energy while in office.

I wish I get well soon. This sucks big time. I wonder if stress has got anything to do with it?

I will keep you all posted about the lastest updates.

Thanks Guys!

Not had iritis but I hear everyone say it's very nasty.
Hope you feel better soon and manage OK at work with it.
Take care.
