Hiya, I'm neutral on the whole probiotic thing. I know some people swear by them but Jon hasn't had any success with them

Homemade sauerkraut caused him to flare up majorly. He took Natren Healthy Trinity probiotics for quite a few months and they were bloody expensive and didn't do a darn thing. Didn't flare him up but didn't help either.

I think changing the bacterial balance in our guts comes more from diet modification than from injesting bacteria.

Another options is wild fermented sauerkraut. Its full of beneficial bacteria and digestive enzymes naturally, no starter is needed. I agree its best to get them naturally in our diet, and cabbage would be your best bet.

Be sure your cabbage is starch free. I have NEVER had a problem with local grown cabbage in california, since we have the perfect climate off the coast for it to grow, and I think it would be similar for you in France.

My mum uses one of these thingys, but instead of their packet mixes uses milk that she innoculates with either some bought natural yoghurt or some from the previous batch. smile

Hello Stacey
Thanks for the idea about yoghurt making.
Are you saying that it has probiotic properties when you make it yourself?
I, like many others I suspect, have been a bit sucked in by all the advertising for the new (expensive) probiotic drinks.
I did not even realised that alternatives existed, I thought it was a revolutionery new idea! Doh!
The power of brain-washing... I mean advertising, aye! LOL!

Thank you Chelsea

I take your points on board.

Interesting to know that the expensive pills didn't have any effect.

I am doing pretty well just on the diet - I was kind of wanting to make sure I wasn't missing out on something that could be beneficial to me. I don't like to rest of my laurels, I like to try and keep up to date with new things.

I must confess, even with all the helpful advice everyone's been offering, I am erring towards sticking as I am at the moment!

I eat a great diet and I love it, I never feel like I'm missing out on anything and I eat such a huge variety of fresh produce now like never before in my life!

Hey Darryn
What do they contain, if you don't mind me asking - I don't mean the whole list of ingredients - just what benefit are they offering, are they probiotic supplements?
Have you noticed any positive effect from taking these?
Thanks, sorry to ask lots more questions!!
