I love desserts. I believe chocolate is okay although I want to avoid dairy too. Mabe the pure cocoa dark stuff. what other things do you guys eat to satisfy the sweet tooth. and do you worry about not enough protein esp. if your avoiding dairy. thanks.

There is no problem on this diet with not enough protein as you still eat meat and eggs which are better sources of protein than dairy anyway.

I bake with coconut flour for my husband...there are lots of recipes posted in the Diet Specific Recipes forum here at KA. I make him pancakes, muffins, slices, cookies, chocolate cake. We have found coconut flour to be safer for him than almond flour...he can get away with a little almond flour but too much flares him up. He is fine with coconut flour and it's super super high in fibre too which is a bonus (even more than wheat bran).

Jon is off dairy too but strangely enough he can get away with chocolate as long as he doesn't over do it. You can get dairy-free chocolate...usually the dark stuff.

Other good desserts are pavlova and meringues. Have with melted chocolate drizzled over and fruit.

Flavour the meringue with rose water, and drizzle with melted dark chocolate when cooked - eat straight away, and leave the fruit for a palate cleanser afterwards! Also good with lightly crushed raspberries, if you cut open the meringue and use it as a scoop for the raspberries.

Dates are good treats - in fact *any* dried fruit gives you concentrated flavour *and* a sugar hit! laugh

Or if you're too darn lazy to bother faffing around making meringues or pavlova (like me) just buy them at the supermarket! Check ingredients but usually store bought ones are OK...nothing much more than egg whites and sugar really.

i love fruit, that's my main sweet snack, that with a square of dark chocolate. have an amaretti cookie recipe: ground almonds, egg whites, almond extract, vanilla extract, a little almond flour (in place of white flour). coconut macaroon recipe: shredded coconut, eggs, butter, vanilla. but really only make these nonstarch cookies for the holidays. mostly its fruit for me. or a little tea with some honey or stevia if i want it sweet, though mostly i have that plain. my new favorite is freeze dried pineapple, kind of expensive but super sweet, like candy!

I'm confused. The AS food guide says to avoid coconut, yet I've read several posts where people are using coconut flour. My husband has just recently started the NSD. He is not accustome to so much "rabbit food". I know he would love a muffin. Is it safe to use the coconut flour with him? His knee is starting to feel better. I'd hate to have him regress now over a muffin or two.

The "AS Food Guide" is not what you should go by if you want to do the NSD. I don't know what the deal is with that food guide but it seems pretty useless to me. It says that yams are okay and coconut is to be avoided???!!! Clearly it is not based on the theory that starch is evil.

It also says to avoid butter, mayonnaise, cabbage, hog meat and beer. But I can eat all of these things without any problems.

I think it should be removed because it is very confusing to someone new. This sites heavily promotes the no starch diet, but also has a contradictory food guide.

I agree...the AS Food Guide needs to go...it's confusing for newbies.

Jeanne...coconut and coconut flour is absolutley safe on the NSD
