Hi Everyone,

This video is for the people with GERD that may be considering surgery. I think this video shows a short but clear explanation about the surgery. I had this procedure done for my paraesophageal hiatal hernia, and this video taught me something I didn't know about it. yes

Take care,
James

I accidentally placed this in the wrong forum. I thought I was in the surgery forum. clown

Yes, knew of this method of fundoplication. But the surgery does have side effects. Effects in digesting the food...rather nasty. You can goodle it up: side effects to/from...etc etc. Did see one, once, where it was talking about a new procedure, where they went in via the throat and placed a band around the neck of the aesophagous, but dammit, can't find the link again.

The 'band' was like to a band with beads on it. One tightened the band, which after swallowing, slightly tightened, then relaxed again to let new food down into the stomach. Stopped allacid coming back up. looked to be *excellent.

BTW. Was soooo glad to hear the doctor say that the problem was NOT with acid. Was a totally different problem - anatomy. Yes. These ant-acids do an awful lot of damage. They cause dependency. Get on em and it can take a whole year to get OFF of em. They also cause osteoporosis! Mine are in the back of the cupboard now. Refuse to take. Put up with the problem instead. Nuisance but not half such a nuisance as the medications would cause humpty

Did you have the fundoplication done James, or was it the H'hernia only. IF HH how are you doing?

OK guys. Take care. Have a good one.

Hi Molly,
Every time I come here I learn new words. grin Yes, I had the fundoplication done. They took the portion of my stomach that was trapped in my chest cavity and wrapped it around my esophagus. They also had to fix the diaphragm too. I have some "clips" in my upper abdoman area left from the hiatal hernia surgery, but I don't know what they are for, or exactly where they are located. While I was under they also fix my umbilical hernia (a small minor hernia in my case). They did all this laproscopically.

My left lung collapsed during HH surgery, and we never would have known about it if the surgeon didn't tell us, because it was already fixed when I awakened. I never had a problem with it either, not even at the hospital. Complete recovery seemed to take forever, because it took me so long to be able to swallow food and liquid without feeling any pain. During the first few months I had a hard time with foods getting stuck down there and I had to keep sipping liquids to get those stuck foods moving downwards. It got better as time went on. I'd say the complete recovery took me about 1.5 years, but the general recovery from the surgical wounds was only maybe 4 months.

Both my umbilical hernia and hiatal hernia are doing fine, (but I think I got a possible ventral hernia now). I still do have some swallowing trouble once in a great while from the tightened spincter, but I have a harder time swallowing in the upper part of my throat on a daily basis now. I need to take small bites of food, and not gulp my liquids. Pills aren't so bad, except the ones without the coatings. About 3 to 4 nights a week I wake up to choking on saliva. It puddles in my throat because I can't swallow well while laying down. This newer swallowing problem is because my throat is getting squished between my collarbones and my cervical spine due to kyphosis, and also loss of height I presume. My doctors are all telling me "some things are better off untouched". On the other hand, My spinal surgeon said he will consider it when and if the time is right. He thinks I might be ready for it 3 years after my past back surgery date. That means in a year and a half or so I can talk to him about it.

I also have that schwannoma my doctors want to take out, which is scarier to me. Before any of this happens though, I want to make sure my bone mass is up to par.

Take care,
James

Hi Molly,

Since the Hiatal hernia repair, I have only been able to vomit one time. I don't seem to mind that side effect, because my stomach doesn't take too long to find another outlet.

Now here is a possible side effect that I do mind. I took your advice and searched for side effects of fundoplication. I came across a number of people having problems with severe bloating. I wonder if this is my reason for severe bloating. Being that I have colitis, I assumed the bloating to be a part of the colitis.

I used to have some acid reflux, but not any more. I get an occasional burn right after eating some spicy food, but that's more of a too spicy thing than a acid reflux thing.

Take care,
James

Hmmmmm - James, sounds like the fundoplication op could well be the cause of the bloating. So many reports of that effect after the op. Too many for comfort...

Wish I could find the link to that op I located last year. Soooo angry with myself - was going to lift it and file it, but didn't get around to it. Have hunted all through, but nowt coming up. GGGRrrrrrrr

Ate some wheat biscuits a couple of days ago. Stoopid of me. Had a vile attack of the LPRG. Vile. Going to give said offenders to my neighbours - get em out of harms/arms way <VBG>

You sure have been through the wars with those surgeries. All those issues. Terrif you are so upbeat and laid back. Great. And, yes, yr doc is right on, any number of things are best left, as to do owt about em is merely to court, if not disaster, then to court other problems!

Best to you James. Takc care now -

Molly C
