You really need him to see a Rheumatologist if there is any possibility of him having an inflammatory condition. Seeing a GP will not get you there and it cannot be diagnosed using lab and x-rays alone.
For some HLA-B27 can be negative or negative result. SED can be normal for some but if it is high makes it easier to get transfered to a Rheumy.
Stress can affect inflammation levels and at the very least make it harder to tolerate the pain.

If I sit in one position too long, my hip will lock and then it'll pop when I try to move it, so it does sound like AS, but your son should see a doctor about it. It could be osteoarthritis or some other issue as well. Good luck.
