I almost put this on the women only.. but I think everyone should be able to see this. Just incase and unregistered ladies out there need this information. : )

What AS-related medications conflict with birth control (that you know of). I read a post with information about an NSAID that did this.. yikes! I want to have kids someday... but the last thing I need is to become preggers when I'm not ready.

Thanks for any responses!

Hi Aly,.. yes I read that post too and was a bit curious.

As far as I am aware, none. I took many different nsaids while on birth control and this was never mentioned as a potential risk by my doc or pharmacist, nor resulted in pregnancy. Hmm, perhaps a conflict appeared with one of the newer nsaids or bc pills. ?

Good question!

I haven't heard of any AS meds affecting birth control. I'm sure my doctor would have told me if mine were conflicting. I am on Remicade and Sulfasalazine for AS and Nuvaring for birth control. I would just ask your rheumy to make sure.

Try googling 'bcp and interactions', or 'oral contraceptives and nsaid'. Some interesting things came up, but I didn't see anything about NSAIDS decreasing the effectiveness of the pill perse. It used to be believed that certain antibiotics decrease the effectiveness of the pill, but I believe that is now not so much an issue given the types of pill that are out there now.

Still, google it. Just to make sure.

Hugs,

Kat
