Hey Brad,
For years when I was younger while living in NC and CA I always said I was moving to Montana which was taken as a joke by the family but I was completely serious. I liked the idea of being in an area less populated and living the rustic likestyle. Now that I am older I would not be able to handle the weather and workload associated with the lifestyle.
Am glad to hear you are out there checking things out and going into the mines. Oddly enough beside wanting to move there my other goal was to live in an underground house. I have friends here who mow their house instead of worrying about painting it. The interior stays close to 60 degrees year round making it possible to make it through the summers without using their AC.

As a Montana native, I can assure you it's ALL beautifully picturesque... the mountainous western half, anyway. (The "easterners" would debate that, but I can assure you their argument has little substance.  ) 'Erie-the-Montanan :-)

Just watch that shaft! You'll be unstable for a while:
radon-222, with a half-life of 3.825 days, emits an alpha particle to become polonium-218.
polonium-218, with a half-life of 3.05 minutes, emits an alpha particle to become lead-214.
lead-214, with a half-life of 26.8 minutes, emits a beta particle and a gamma ray to become bismuth-214.
bismuth-214, with a half-life of 19.7 minutes, emits either an alpha particle or a beta particle and a gamma ray to become either thallium-210 or polonium-214.
polonium-214, with a half-life of a 150 microseconds, emits an alpha particle to become thallium-210.
thallium-210, with a half-life of 1.32 minutes, emits a beta particle to become lead-210.
lead-210, with a half-life of 22 years, emits a beta particle and a gamma ray to become bismuth-210.
bismuth-210, with a half-life of five days, emits a beta particle to become polonium-210.
polonium-210, with a half-life of 138 days, emits an alpha particle and a gamma ray to become lead-206.
lead-206 is a stable isotope of lead.
I can never remember these transition/transmutational decay phases...

Of course dose is everything.
We all have that, your decay paragraph, going on in our body everyday from Natural background radiation. By all indicators the mines and spa are below the safe limit or annual dose you get during a short stay.
No families take so little medicine as those of doctors, except those of apothecaries.

UGH, well...er...NOT REALLY, but anyone can SAY this if they want; proving it is quite another thing entirely.
MOST people do not inhale very much radon, but there are probably basements of houses in Omaha that have much higher levels of radon than that mine in Montana.
In fact, "NORMAL background radiation" is so dramatically dissimilar to breathing in radon-rich air that any such comparison is just plain weird and even specious. If it were the same, just visiting Denver would have the same therapeutic effects as the mine.
Whether dosages, unique genetics, or lifestyle factors (such as smoking, eating Beluga caviar, sunbathing, etc) have more or less to do with who develops negative side effects to radon exposure and when, there probably is some cumulative lifetime exposure quotient that has yet-to-be-determined. Hail to the pioneers!

well actually not all radon therapy is by inhalation. One study was in radon water by soaking the joints and no inhalation occurred. SO the radon rich air is not the answer as to why we see benefits.
Remember AS was put into total remission in the 1950's in Germany through the use of radiation. Unfortunately the leukemias that resulted were ugly and the doses were too high.
