If you want to use this QR code (Quick Response code) just save the image and paste it where you want. You can even print it and use it that way. Coffee cups, T-Shirts etc would all be good for the QR code.

Hi, my name is Peter and I'm fairly new to all this. I was diagnosed with AS this winter. I've tried the NSD twice but always loose alot of weight and feel drained. Are there any active guys around here who don't want to look like a stick, and have managed to maintain weight on the NSD? Thanks alot Peter

Hi Peter - What have you been eating? Try adding some healthy fats - coconut oil is healthy and I can eat it by the spoonful, I love the taste. Try eating up to 6 Tablespoons per day. Do you have an appetitie or just haven't found enough foods you can tolerate?
I love roasted whole chickens with olive oil and salt, get organic and even eat the crispy skin. Save the bones and cook them over night in the crock pot covered with water and seasoned with salt for a healthy mineral chicken broth, drink 1 cup every day. I like to add a clove of crushed garlic when I am serving, its delicious.
I love chopped chicken liver. It's easy to prepare - just saute 1/2 lb chicken livers and 1 chopped onion in 6 T of organic butter. Then food process it with 2 hardboiled eggs, season with salt to taste, refridgerate and serve the pate on celery sticks.
Fish is easy to prepare, just ask your fish monger for best cooking instructions for different types of fish - ususally just season with olive oil and salt, then grill or roasting or pan frying, depending on the fish you choose. They all go great with some saute spincah and garlic, I like to add some tomato salsa too.
Organic eggs are great and easy to prepare. You can add some meat and veggies.
It's real easy to get some sliced deli meats, turkey or roast beef, and just make wraps with lettuce, tomatoes and avocados. Make sure your meats are starch free, I eat boarhead brand. Whole foods serves a good brand as well.
Smoked salmon is easy. Just make sure they didn't add any starches or wierd sugars or spices while smoking. I get a good brand at trader joes or whole foods.
Hope this helps give you some easy ideas you can tolerate.
Jeanne

Hi Peter. I was really concerned about the weight loss I experienced when I first started NSD. Now, I don't remember who advised me but someone told me when first starting the NSD we could lose weight but that our weight should stop at our body's proper weight. Also when we first start the NSD we will lose a lot of water and that will show as a weight loss. Our body will resort to using the fat calories already stored [hence more weight loss]. Our body will also adapt to the new foods we are eating, but it takes awhile! You need to give your body a chance to adapt. If you are still concerned about loosing too much weight do as Jeanne suggests, start eating more of the healthy fats. Even if we don't want to put on weight our bodies still need these healthy fats to maintain our energy etc. Remember our food is our bodies fuel. When we used to eat carbs our bodies used that readily available fuel now our body needs to adapt to using a different fuel! Make sense???? Clear as mud, eh?! I guess I'm just saying give your body a chance to adapt to the NSD and you will be a lot happier. Cheers, Rita James, 12, Adrian, 10, Elisabeth, 3, my babies!

Thanks to both of you. Its nice to talk to other people who understand. It can be pretty lonely and discouraging trying to figure this stuff out. How long did it take for your bodies to stabalize and get used to the new diet? A diet so high in protein and fat- isn't that unhealthy? Also I'm having trouble with 'the runs.' My stomache grumbles all day and then out it all comes! Any sugguestion? Thanks again. Peter

Hey, thanks again for your help I have a huge appetite, I just can't seem to feed it. I eat tons of food (meat, fruit, veg- especially meat and fruit) and I wake up starving hungry in the morning, able to see all my ribs!! Do those 6 tablespoons of cocnut oil help with hunger? Also are you taking supliments? Could not taking any have to do with my very low energy levels? Thanks again for everything. Peter

Hi Peter. It took probably a couple of weeks for me and my body to get used to the NSD, and sometimes I siill want some 'carbs/starch/peanut-butter toast'! If you post a list of all the foods and drink you are consuming it will be easier to pinpoint what is 'ailing' your tummy! It might just be that your tummy is trying to get used to NOT eating what you normally eat and it is rebelling against you! Post us a list of food you eat now and what you used to normally eat. For myself, I pretty much consumed a diet of starch with a little meat and some veggies. I didn't drink coffee or alcohol, but I did and still do drink lots of tea! Oh yeah, and the weight loss pretty much stabilized after 3 months or so, but is was quite drastic in the first 2 months!! which was pretty scary, I was worried that I would end up like the character in Stephen King's book, Thinner! Also, I think it is normal for us to be worried that taking the starch out of our diet is damaging. After all we grew up with the idea of the "perfect food pyramid" thrown at us all the time! I personally think the food pyramid must be sponsored by the Canadian Wheat Growers! makes sense doesn't it!? Also, we are getting carbs, we must remember that the best source of good carbs comes from veggies NOT starch!! Also, food is to provide fuel for our bodies nothing else! If you were highly allergic to peanuts would you still eat them? 'cause they are healthy! We need to remember [especially if friends and family are worried about us cutting out the starch and not eating healthy] that we are eating healthy. Fruit and vegetables and meat is the healthiest we could eat! I gotta laugh, when I first started the NSD my Mom was so worried about me not eating healthy. I stepped back and took a look at what my mom eats [she survives on coffee, cigarettes, and coffee cream!] and decided that I would NOT take diet advice from my mom [even though I love her dearly!] but that I would take diet advice from people who were eating NSD and were experiencing what I wanted to experience. Sorry, I got kinda longwinded there! Cheers, Rita James, 12, Adrian, 10, Elisabeth, 3, my babies!

Oops! forgot something! Do you eat just 3 times a day, or do you graze all day long? I think it is more beneficial for us to graze all day, that way we can keep our energy up. I like to have raisins and nuts [pecans/walnuts/almonds] and just have a bag of them everywhere I go and eat a little now and then when I am feeling peckish! Squeaky

Thanks again. What I used to eat: A lot of bread, pasta, meat, eggs, and some fruits and veggies.
What I am eating right now. Still some brown rice- it effects me somewhat but I am affraid to go off it again. 9 egg omlet for breakfast (only 3 yoks) with Broccoli chopped up in it.
Long grain brown rice with avocado and other viggies for lunch
Big chicken salad (with old cheddar cheese) for supper- and usually another one later. Also more rice with avocado later in the day. Can of tuna before bed. some pine nuts with raisins throughout the day. Also fruit throughout the day.
That's pretty much it. Thanks so much again. Also when you say your weight finally stabalized, do you mean that you gained weight back until you were at a healthy weight?
Ok, I'm really finished. Peter

I graze all day as well. Sometimes I forget, but I'm usually pretty good. Kinda running out of money though! Yikes! This diet puts holes in the pockets for sure, and I got college to pay for. Thanks again- it helps so much to be talking to people who have been through this and are staying strong! You're all a blessing Peter
