I've seen the term (or acronym) FOS in several posts regarding diet. Can someone tell me what FOS stands for or what it is?

Thanks
Tommy

Fructo-oligo-saccharides. In onions, leeks, artichokes etc. Some have a problem digesting them and consequently can cause digestion problems.

Thanks Bilko - I see why everyone abbreviates it as FOS now!

FOS can be a food source for bacteria, they use it in cheaper probiotic supplements to assist the bacteria within the supplement.

I have not had issue with FOS in some foods such as onions and asparagus, but I have reacted to probiotic supplements containing FOS from experience.

My understanding is that FOS and 'Inulin' are closely related in the same way sugar and starch are related.

Anyways, I am one of those few people who can not tolerate Onions, and Garlic due to inulin / FOS (and for the same reason probably can not tolerate Artichokes, Chicory, Leeks and Asparagus)
