Blocked ears? Wow, I never knew that! What is it exactly - are the symptoms like having trouble hearing, feeling 'stuffy in the ears'? I have that - maybe I am not going deaf after all! I'd love to know!
Thanks
Jess

Gilly, I would be interested in hearing more about this 'blocked ear' subject! I haven't come across that at the site yet, or I have forgotten it! My left ear has been bothering me, mostly at night, in fact, I could swear the toilet was running all night, you know that sound the toilet makes???, all night! my husband checked it, and it was not running! in the morning, I checked it and it wasn't running. It drove me crazy, that was 2 nights ago. Last night, the same thing, but I knew it was just my ears! didn't help me sleep though. Another thing it reminded me of was listening in a sea shell for the ocean sound.

I'll be checking this thread for more responses!

Cheers,
Rita

[by the by, is Charlie doing any better? I hope so!]

That is a new AS symptom for me and I have had AS since 1951 and the only times I have had stuffed ears feelings has been during a bad cold or a minor ear infection or being subjected to high noise levels in areas where I often worked.

What other problems have you had during the stuffed ear problems? Do you constantly play the radio and TV at high speaker levels as that can give you the same problems.

Hi,
My partner gets it quite a lot and what he does for his blocked ear is put olive oil in his ear and apparently it helps to dissolve the wax build up.He keeps his head on the side for a while and then he says the relief is just like that a click of his fingers.
Once he went to the doc and they syringed it out and gave him drops but he prefers olive oil.Hope this helps,

take care jude2

Blocked ears...trouble with hearing...
pain with extreme cold way down deep...
draining, ears plugging and popping, ringing...an echo (that was annoying)...
One time i thought i heard a machine in the house unplugged everything inc. the fridge ect...it was my ears! drove me insane!
just to name a few of the ear experiences ive had over the last few years...
went to an ENT (ear nose throat)FINALLY.....
well after a lot of testing...we discovered that my hearing is slightly less than others my age, and He said it was arthritis in my jaw and ear area...
like a tmj only worse...
(annoying to hear to hear him say at the very least)
Gave me a silly list...warm packs, soft chew foods, mouth guard(yes i grind/clench my teeth...hey im a mom what can i say! ), and IB to take down inflamation, and NO gum chewing..

My conclusion...
okay another place for arthritis to settle woohoo
i dont chew gum.
heating packs are nice...but they dont make it better...
and I take IB already as a prescrip from the rheumy for the a.s.

BUT this is what ive learned...mine is due to barometer changes..
lol
seriously!
storm coming in...ears plug
storm going out...ears unplug
storm here...hearing is a struggle...
nice and clear...lol...then its nice and clear...
when a storm is on the way or here my phone is on maximum volume and it still hard to hear
but when its gone and nice out...(and ive left it on max) lemme tell you I hear just fine! (yikes!)
(((unfortunetly the fibro likes to play super sensitive on hearing at times, those are days that the kids are screaming! LOL I cant win!)))

I dont know if any of this helped or was even remotely close to what you were refering to...
but I thought it wouldnt hurt to throw it in

I hope it is a passing thing either way...cause mine drives me crazy all the time!

My ears and jaw have had problems for years. Pressure changes are very hard to tolerate (like when the airplane lands) and I have popping in my right ear a lot. I also cannot chew gum without problems. I never thought about it possibly being arthritis, but it would make sense. I had to get an appliance to stop clenching my teeth at night. If you clench or grind, it can REALLY make you jaw, ears and teeth hurt.

I think I know exactly what you are talking about. Before I was diagnosed, I would have a recurring irritation of the ear, that made my ear not as sensitive as before, and I could not hear very well. One day when it was happening, I had an appointment at the Dr., he looked at it and said my eardrum was inflamed and irritated. It passed like always and my hearing recovered. I still get it occasionally, and I think it is just one of those rare peripheral symptoms that happens and then goes away. Another 'symptom' I think I have is nodules that appear in my earlobes. I have those about 2-3 times a year, and have had it since I was a kid.

By the way my hip replacement is doing awesome. Had it done a year and a half ago, and have full strength in that leg. Which is amazing since I was limping badly for 10 years.

Your post is nicely timed Gilly. I've being having very recent earaches and reduced hearing. I'm planning on seeing the doctor within the next week. I'll ask about possible connections with AS. I'll report back when I've had my appointment.
Best wishes,
Tim.
