Everybody in the Pool!

After 1 1/2 weeks of getting in the pool everyday at the Y, I am amazed at how much the pain and stiffness is gone from my neck/shoulder/upper back area.

I actually woke up in the middle of the night and couldn't fall back asleep last night, because I was so comfortable! I couldn't believe what was happening! I was turning over in all directions, without the usual moaning and cursing!

I'll keep you posted on the progress, and let you know if it was just a dream or if I am really not going to be stiff anymore.

Thats excellent....I've been thinking about joining our YMCA to do the same thing.

JM, that is awesome news! Good for you.

I get extremely tight shoulders and neck, and have found that walking (and, of course, swinging my arms) can go a long way toward easing the tension and pain from it. Also, I get the same effect as you from my Flamenco classes. All that upper body work. However you do it, swimming, walking, dancing, is all to the good in the end.

ABSOLUTELY
Water fitness is the best thing for AS'ers.
I was a competetive swimmer in my younger years and continued in aquatics as aquatics director, fitness instructor and coach for many years. I even developed special programs for special needs, it was great. I quit working in aquatics due to the stress of executive management and decided to take my expertise to land therapy. I love working in physical therapy, but my passion has always been the pool. Actually when I quit working in aquatics is when my AS started taking a nose dive and I have never come out of it. I miss it terrably as there is no pool in this area warm enough for me now. They are all competetive colder pools or too expensive for me.

Count another ex-lifeguard/swim instructor here! I like swimming, but I guess it's something I leave for when I've exhausted all other activities. Now that Cindy's mentioned it - I think the reason I'm not so into swimming anymore is because the pools around here are kept so cold now. Makes it tough on the joints sometimes.

Isn't that feeling of being comfy in bed the best?! It's so great when you can actually get there! It's funny how you appreciate the little things like that. Everyone here understands that - that's why I love this place!

Hydrotherapy is one of the oldest A/S treatments. The hot water is easier on joints and also very relaxing. Our Rheumatolagy unit has sessions for A/S patients two evenings per week and is alife saver. God bless the NHS.

I spent alot of time in our pool this summer, but now that it is closed for winter I will be looking for a place for winter.

My YMCA pool is warm, bath water because they treat a lot of arthritis people. They hold 3 classes every morning, and 2 in the evening, and open lap in between. You can even participate in yoga or pilates, exercise machines, weight room. I'm pretty impressed with the program. Very progressive.

Glad you are getting relief from the pool.
I have finally started this water excercize after my rheumy found out I was fusing more and insisted I get started soon. The problem is that I had this stigma from a local YMCA ad on TV that shows these Older ladies in the pool doing this "Y-M-C-A" song. I just couldn't see myself in the middle doing the "M" or "C" with them. ha ha
After 3 weeks, however, I seem to have more flexibility mobility. It looks like it may be doing some help. I know that one of the reasons the warm pool works well is because you are not putting full compression on your vertebrae and thus making it easier to move.

about ten years ago i went to the Trimpany center here in san jose which has warm water and wheel chair ramps.I took a class for arthritics but it killed me.I found it better to
do my own thing and pace myself.i was the youngest at 43 back then.Now that I am retired I am think i will try again.Warm water sure helps ,i spend about 3 hours every morning in my bathtub.
