Has anyone discussed or come across a link between Shingles and AS?

Greg,
I don't know if there is any link...but I was very interested in seeing this thread because I'm 21 and was recently diagnosed with AS...but I had shingles when I was 19. It'll be interesting to see if there is a link between the two. ~Jess

I have never had shingles... have you read about this previously?

Curious,

Tim

Interesting that you mention this, my first symptoms of AS may have been shortly after I had the Chicken Pox (same virus as Shingles). I was about 9-10 and had the Chicken pox about a year before that. I know the two happened within about a year or two of each other, but I'm not sure which one came first. The AS symptoms disappeared for about 10 years after the first symptom. It was dismissed as a "cold settling in my back".

Hi Greg,

I have had AS for just over 55 years which started when I was 15 years old. I am now 70 but the ladies in the neighourhood think that I am only 53.

For the last 2 years, I have been having a growing amount of pain which the Doctor, who cannot find any relationship of this pain with the calcification going on within my spine and on my heart valves. In the last few months, I have developed much pain in my leg nerves starting from my mid spine area and down to my toes.

An Mri just recently found that my pain is much like the pain from Diabetes and Shingles which is just labeled as "Neuropathy".

I wonder if you are experiencing this neuropathy pain yourself and if so, how are you treating it/

I am at the point now where I can barely walk and even with my cane, I need help in walking and one of my sons to help put me to bed at night.

If you do have this pain, I am just starting a drug called "LYRICA" since the last 3 days and while it puts me to sleep and gives me a decent night of rest, it is not a neurapathy cure, it suppodedly will control all the pains which come with neuropathic problems.

Nice to see you join us and hope that you stay around.

Regards,

OldGeorge

Hmmm...Interesting....
I had shingles about 15 years ago. But I have never heard of any relationship between shingles and AS. But I was only diagnosed a few months ago.

I am always thinking about possible relationships between AS and any other conditions. For instance I have always wondered if my AS could have been jump started after my visit to Indonesia where I caught *something* that the doctors there called Varacilla (i think).
