If you want to use this QR code (Quick Response code) just save the image and paste it where you want. You can even print it and use it that way. Coffee cups, T-Shirts etc would all be good for the QR code.

Sorry, I know this post dosn't really belong in this forum but I wanted to make sure folks see it.
My brother and his lady friend are coming from England in September and we are going to spend 2 nights in New York City. I would love input from any folks around there - what is a good neighbourhood to stay in ( in a hotel )?. I tried to book around central park but the only decent looking, almost affordable hotel becomes pretty unaffordable when $30 per night parking etc.. etc.. is added in. So, I figure there are a lot of motels/hotels in new Jersey but I don't want to get caught in any yucky areas.
Can any of you give me good ideas? Nice areas with fast and easy access to downtown ?
STEVEC perhaps you can advice me ?
Thanks in advance
Maggie
Thanks

Hi Maggie... Yes, talk to Linc. I'm going to let you in on a really really big secret I have two girls that live in NYC and everytime I visit them I stay at the Women's Republican Club. The prices are incredible, it is right next door to Rockefeller Center and 5th Avenue. It seems that they change the number everyday, and you have to hunt for it, but it's worth it! Here is a possible link... http://www.google.com/maps?hl=en&lr=&q=women%27s+republican+club&near=New+YorkGood Luck. Book an audience at some TV shows if you can - like "The View" (they always give really great stuff away) or "Martha Stewart" (so does she). Have fun. Go to some shows and Eat a LOT!!!!

Maggie, I hope you have a lovely few days with your brother in New York. I think between Mike, Linc and Steve, you have a fairly good chance of great suggestions for things to do and places to stay. Hugs,
Kat

Hi Maggie, I love New York City. I've been there about half a dozen times and have stayed in several different hotels. I find that the best way to get a good price was online. Do a little research on the hotel before you book though. I'm not sure what you mean by downtown(?) Right now I would get a street map of Manhattan and study it. The streets are laid out pretty logically. But I would study it ahead of time, because it's hard to stand there and refer to a map when you are surrounded by people. My favorite was the Algonquin. That is a little pricey but worth it. There is a great diner 2 doors down called the Red Flame that is perfect for breakfast. There's usually a line, but they can work you in fast. I go there even if I don't stay at the Algonquin. December of 2004 I stayed at the Hotel Edison. It's at 47th and Broadway(around the corner) and has a cafe in the hotel. It's very convenient if you want to be near Times Square, Rockefeller Center, etc. There is a nightclub downstairs so make sure you are on an upper floor. Aside from that it was a very good place to stay. I've also stayed at the Super 8 Hotel. That was pretty convenient but not quite as convenient as the Edison. The rooms were a decent size, clean and so forth and they provided a continental breakfast . The Super 8 in Manhattan is not like other Super 8's though. Like every other hotel there it is full of marble, glass and brass. It is on 46th street between 5th and 6th Ave. Another one I've stayed at was the Comfort Inn Midtown. We had a corner room that wasn't very large. Most rooms aren't in NYC. It was ok, but very convenient to Times Square and area, had a continental breakfast and a decent deli right down the street. It's on 46th street between 6th Ave. and Broadway. One hotel I stayed at that had pretty large rooms was the Park Central. That was a pretty long time ago and I went as a group, so I'm not sure what the hotel rate was. While you are there you should go to a restaurant called "Ellen's Stardust Diner" It's on Broadway at 51st street. They have decent prices, and a diner type menu with blue plate specials. The best thing about it though is that you get entertained while you eat. The waiters sing while they wait on tables and put on a show. It's such a fun place to go. If you like Italian and can get to Little Italy that's no problem. But if you don't have time to go to Little Italy go to Tony's Di Napoli. It's on 43rd between 6th and 7th avenue. The food is soooo good. There's usually a line so go kind of early. The food is served family style - one plate serves 3-4 people. I'm wondering what you plan on doing while you are there. Some places can't be missed. I love St. Patricks Cathedral. You have to go there. It's unbelievable. If you plan on doing sightseeing there is a card called the New York Pass that you can get for different allotments of time. You can get a 2 day, 3 day etc. pass. It has a metro card included and is a very good deal. I've used all modes of transportation going in and getting around except driving my own car. If you can, go to a show while you are there, and a museum. The statue of Liberty and Ellis Island and the United Nations are very interesting if you like learning about the people. Ground Zero is a heart wrenching place to go, if you do, try hard to go to St. Pauls Chapel(Broadway and Fulton). It's the little chapel that was used to take care of the rescue and recovery workers of 911. It's hard to believe that this little church was so close and made it through with no damage. I hope to plan another trip there before too long. It's a very exhausting trip so rest up and take your absolute most comfortable shoes no matter what they look like. You'll be doing a lot of walking. Have fun, Wanda

Anybody know what North Bergen New Jersey is like ? There is a Super 8 motel there with excellent prices and a bus from the door to NY City ? I'd rather stay right in Manhatten but this is just one part of our trip and I'm not sure we want to pay Manhatten prices.

Wow Nonnie, you are a mine of information. Thankyou so much. I'm looking up all the places you have mentioned. As I've said above though, I'm not sure we should spend what it takes to stay in Manhatten, although that is definatly what I'd dearly love to do.
We have just rented a cottage on Cape Cod for the few days following.
Sooooooo exciting.
In NYC, I'd like to shop at Macy's, see the Statue of Liberty, see Time Square and take a horse & buggy ride around central Park !!!!!
Of course that's just me - there are 3 other people to consider so I know we will be busy busy !!
I'll be sure to write down your restaurant recommendations too.
Thanks a million
Oh and to keep this post relavant to AS - yes I will be sure to wear sensible shoes
