Hi!

I have not posted for a while! I have been no starch diet
for many years now & I'm still getting worse to where it's crippling me. I'm now trying the Antibiotic Protocol in a last ditched effort to get this disease under control. Does anybody know of anyone in a similar situation where the NSD has not worked & they have tried something like the Antibiotic Therapy to get this disease under control. I've run out of idea's & my doctors to get this disease under control. My doctor is convinced it's a bacterial infection that is the cause of my AS as he has had positive results with long term Antibiotic treatment.

Any comments!

marcus,

there are some people that do not respond to the NSD. you may be one unless you are getting starch from a hidden food or are sensitive to a food that you continue to eat. have you done an elimination diet? kept a food diary? i'm guessing you have since you have been on the diet for a few years.

antibiotics? i've been on minocin for two years with great results. it took approximately 3 months to take effect. you will probably develop resistance and have to switch antibiotics periodically. i'm very close to needing to switch myself.

have you ruled out ongoing infections from other potential sources? one of my root canals has been a source of infection for years. i think it may trigger some of my flares. i also have a bone cyst which is a sign of ongoing infection. i intend to eliminate that source of infection asap and see what happens.

if all else fails, i would try one of the bioligics if you don't response to sulfasalazine or methotrexate.

Hi, Marcus:

Have you tried eliminating dairy, also? The apple regimen should be done to help cleanse the system. Also, close attention to EFAs.

What worries me is two related issues: 1) People with AS that is caused by candidiasis usually do not respond very well to the NSD, and 2) Taking antibiotics can either cause or exacerbate candidiasis. Before doing the antibiotics, I would work to treat any potential for candidiasis and do things in cycles.

Andy has a good idea there; potential hidden starches or other things could be keeping your AS going. Please share with us--to the smallest detail--what you are eating...and don't even leave out the smallest thing, including pills. I took enzyme pills that had 'no added starch' on the label and they caused a terrible reaction! After testing with iodine, I saw WHY. Even a candy bar with peanuts or caramel could be the bad guy. Well, we just hate to have you on the NSD with no results!

Best to You,
John

Hi John,

I have elimated dairy also. I know antibiotics are a risk
but so many people have had good results going on the antibiotics so I gather it's worth a try especially if it's
micoplasma infection that won't clear with diet. I have
looked at candida & have gone low carb as well to get the
candida down. I do have candida in moderate amounts that
was picked up on Live Blood Cell Analysis.

As for diet I eat no starch at all for a few nuts e.g -

Breakfast - Fruit (Low sugar)

Lunch - Green Salad with avocado,Macadamia nuts, Almonds etc

Tea - Fish, Green Salad, Fruit etc

My diet is mainly fresh fruits & vegetables, no processed
food as well.

I know candida can be the underlying cause of many diseases
which I have tried to eliminate on many occassions but
whether it's the cause in this amount is unknown. I guess
what's scaring me is the damage it's doing to my body which is irreversable once it happens.

I guess the other thing could be high dose probiotics for
the gut to see what happens

How about a biologic such as Remicade or Enbrel, Humira. Has your Rheumy or GP suggested these?? Scotty...

I would rather stay away from the biologics as the side
affects & damage they can cause are unknown. Anyway they
don't do anything to help the disease they just suppress
the symptoms

Hi, Marcus:

Do you test the fruits? Carol had terrible problems with nectarines once, and most mangoes are starchy. She claims this type of starch is especially bad.

Aside from that, your diet is so strict that it should work once you treat yourself for the yeast. There is a great description of a regimen in the Zampieron, et al book. I don't remember it exactly, but what I would do for over a month is: 2400mg Caprylic acid per day along with some garlic (about 1/4 bulb daily), colloidal silver, and fresh vegetable juices that contain onion juices. The Stonyfield Farms yoghurt at 2oz 2X daily, and other anti-candidiasis herbs.

Eat some okra, if you can manage, or at least some canned lychee fruit.

You know my regimen for EFAs--about 5g immediately before retiring: Mix olive oil, borage seed (or evening primrose or black currant), salmon, and flaxseed oils. Some wheatgrass juice (4oz/day for 3 days then off for 4 days). With the above you should have some improvement soon--certainly within a month.

I would do the antibiotics, certainly, but after achieving some reduction of the yeast.

Also, some of the biologics should reduce the progression of AS, and they then might be worth the risks. In combination with reduced starch, one of our members has had great success for six years now, and believes together they have stopped AS progression.

I hope you can achieve some results even without doing the apple regimen, but that might be a good option--or maybe blueberries for two days; I did that with some improvements.

Please let us know how you are doing, and write if you need more information on my own protocol, Regards,
John

I like the simplicity of your diet...
Not doing starch is a great way to start, but there are heaps of ways to be pro-active against Kp and other bugs and against Ca as well.
Apple cider vinegar twice a day on an empty stomach helps kill and clean.
I took it for three months and it took away some candida "symptoms" like itchy bum and eased dandruff/dry skin.
EVOO last thing at nite as well.

These are minimalist as far as supplementation goes and after, say, three months of that i would add probiotics via sauerkraut, as well as aloe vera, lychee, okra etc. to actively heal the gut.
If there's a lot of damage and candida influx then its a long healing process.
John has a list of helpful supplements as long as your arm and the place for most of them is noticeable, but many can be acquired by good food - most minerals by kelp granules and fresh greens - daily, twice daily, thrice daily.

Marcus,
I have not been on the KA site in a couple years. As John says, some get better and forget. Your diet to me seems very lacking in protiens and fat. Is the fish oily, cold water fish? For myself a diet of eggs with a breakfast containing greens, followed by grazing (literaly) on nuts and vegies throu the day with too much coffee, followed by a dinner of oiley fatty foods like beef, oily fish, of pork (not a lot)in ballance with greens or vegies works. Fruit is candy.. usually a once a day thing. Real meals are events. For me, the key i was finding myself. (sorry)I'll try to stay out of the life change stuuf.

Exercise is key. I had to start in a pool of water and that hurt. The pain is gone now and some even say I'm "ripped." Bone likes muscle.

I'm soory if this reponse is insensitive to profiles ect. Don't lable "last ditch" until you are at your funeral. Hopelessness is deadly. (some MDs too)

Love, IKe
