While you are having floods on the west coast of the US, spare a thought to the Ozzies frying on the eastern coast of Australia. Sydney's official temp yesterday was 45 degrees, by American standards that may not appear warm, but we do measure this in the celcius scale. This was not the warmest temp in that state!
On top of this bush fires have broken out in a number of states.
Hope all you guys down south are safe and well.

I don't think I would be able to survive 45 degrees. I don't like it if we get over 25 degrees. I certainly hope that everyone is safe and well.

To help put it into prospective, 45c works out to be about 113f... so yep... was pretty hot here yesterday... 2nd highest ever recorded temp in Sydney's history. Bush fires have claimed a few homes around the Sydney area and one fire-fighter received burns to 60% of his body and is currently in a serious condition in hospital. The high temps and strong winds on New Years day just made it ripe for fires. Hope it's not a sign of things to come over the summer... Today is a lot cooler and we received some rain early this morning that has helped the fire-fighters battling the blazes.
My thoughts go out to all involved in both areas... opposite ends of the world battling opposite weather conditions... Fires and Floods.

Well I do agree that it was very hot yesterday. I can barely remember ever experiencing that temperature. It is a record for Sydney, but we have experienced that kind of temperature in Melbourne in the past. It happened when my oldest sister was lying in a coma in hospital after we experienced a near fatal accident at Phillip Island. She survived her injuries and continues to be well. The temperatures reached something like 110F at that time. Since I was a child of no more than 4 and 1/2, I did not remember that heat.
The heat was terrible yesterday. Even the animals were distressed because of the heat. They came in for a short time, and the dog was sitting and panting, whilst the cat went and stretched out on the laundry floor.
The rain is very welcome, and it has made the day very pleasant.
At least it was dry heat yesterday, and I did not suffer from the usual aches and pains that comes with humidity.
Today is the first day of the rest of my life

Hi all
Its been really bad here at Umina on the Central Coast with the fires.An ambulance man lost his life after he went to the hospital to stock up on more ventilin,he died of a heart attack.My heart goes out to the firies and everyone involved.
I ended up calling my girls to get them to help me leave.I live at the bottom of a mountain that was going up in flames,the smoke was choking us,my cat was in a panic so I thought it better just to leave before we were asked to.Today is such a welcome relief!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
3 huge cheers for the firies who put their lives on the line fighting these fires!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

what a relief to know that you are ok and that you evacuated before the fire had time to reach you.
I heard about the man who died. He was a volunteer. Yike. I wonder what brought on the heart attack at that moment.
I agree the change in weather is a welcome relief.

Yeah Im safe,well for now,they have got choppers back water bombing it again,so Im not sure what is going on right now.Dont worry,first sign of trouble again and Im out of here.Im keeping on eye on it for now but the air is pretty clear today so I wont get lungfuls of smoke like I did yesty,I was so sick last night from it.I will leave before that happens again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! How the firies deal with it is beyond me,they are heroes in my eyes. I am sure we are ok here now though,well Im praying we are.

with the improvement in the weather today I can only hope that the fires will be extinguished. The important thing happens to be that you are safe. Take care. Will be thinking about your safety in the coming days.

Our climates are very much alike (4 seasons, mud, flood, drought, and fire) so I can only send you my sympathy but not all this extra RAIN . We've had about 8-10 inches of rain in the last 2 weeks (I believe that translates as "just too many bloody cm's" or around 20-25 of them in Ozzian ) but I haven't checked the rain gauge from last night yet so there may be more....no, there IS more, I just don't want to look.  What a lot of people don't realize about some parts of Northern California is that we get very hot here in the summertime also, and for about 3 months the daily high is about 95ºF to 105ºF, and it doesn't rain here at all for months, either. Once the air temperatures go above body temperature all living things start to feel much stress. This is a very sobering reminder that if the earth warms up just a little bit on average, and the ocean temperatures continue to rise, changing the jet stream winds, it will have a massive impact on how we continue to live. We have been having all this freakishly warm rain instead of snow in the mountains, there is little snowpack, and because there is so much water runoff there has been some flooding, but not as bad as it was in '97. As long as we keep getting breaks in the storms for a day or two, we should be okay. I hate fire season when it gets really windy.
