Does anyone here know if drinking Yakult is effective in the treatment/management of AS?
Yakult is known to rid the body of halmful bacteria (like Klebsiella pneumoniae that causes AS).

I don't know about the bacteria, but I drink it now and then with no obvious ill effects. If I drink too much though, my stomach doesn't feel too good.
According to their website:

"Yakult is a fermented skimmed milk drink containing: water, skimmed milk (reconstituted), glucose syrup, sugar, flavouring and Lactobacillus casei Shirota bacteria."

I sure other people here would know more about this than me. Glucose shouldn't be harmful, but I wonder what the flavouring is?

Personally I hate the stuff, but I know some who do well on it with ulcerative colitis.

Ther eis alot ofresearch happening oin the UK on pro and pre biotics and that thoughts from the researchers is try them and see but liekly you have to keep it up to retain any benefits. Somne do not do well at all, so different pro-biotic strains etc should be tried.

As most of the nacteria is in the bowel I'n not so sure that applying it to the top end going to get it to the bit where the bacteria is supposed to be most active..

Let us know how you go!

I contacted them via their website as they were claiming that Yakult boosted your immune system & as AS is auto-immune, I was concerned that my AS may become more active. I explained about AS, klebsiella etc. & they came back saying that they didn't know what sort of effect it would have on AS & referred me back to my doctor

My 2 cents : friendly bacteria = good ... dairy = bad :-)

hey u have AS, u live in oz, AND you are in IT. That is three things we have in common

I flare on this stuff so for me it is effective the other way round.

I heard that in order to get enough of the beneficial bacteria to where they needed to be, we'd have to consumme 36 bottles a day. Apparently probiotics are better in capsule form.

Personally I am wary of anything that gets presented in a supermarket in a yakult (or-similar)bottle-shaped fridge. A good rule of thumb, I'll think you'll find!

NASS is doing some research in probiotics and AS at the moment. Not sure if bilko signed up for it or not, or any of the other Brits here??

>> Apparently probiotics are better in capsule form.

there is the question about whether either drink / yoghurt / capsules will survive the journey through the stomach acid. As you already know I've got a whole swag full of theories .. heres another : if you drink the probiotic capsule with 2 or 3 cups of water then your stomach will just dump it - no acid will get a chance to kill off the friendly critters
