Yes George - in fact alive and cyclin'. To celebrate 5 years of a functional body I set up a cycling holiday company! http://www.fcarvalho-ciclismo.com . 10% discount for anyone who can complete a tour on the NSD!
For the newbies on this board, George is one of the main reasons that you are no longer creaking like you used to as he was integral to introducing the diet to the net. He found dramatic results on the diet, although it never did sort out his golf swing! (only pulling your leg George).

Yes Charlie you are correct... thank you George.

I had pleasure to meet George in Vegas over 2 yrs ago now along with Dr. Ebringer, Carol Sinclair and the Dragonslayer. Very cool!

Thanks guys, I remember the first time I posted on the old site about the diet. Boy did I get a cold reception, fortunately John was on the site at that time, and with his experience of fasting thought right away hey there might be something in this. I dont have to explain to the guys on this site the pain that AS causes or the frustration when no one seems to either believe you or tells you its in your mind etc etc. The thing I find really difficult to take in is that Doctors will prescribe things like Celebrex, Vioox and other drugs BUT WILL NOT SAY LOOK JUST TRY THIS DIET. Thanks again guys you do so much for other sufferers of AS by just sticking around and giving the benefit of your experience. George

The thing I find really difficult to take .....

But George, remember, doctors may have to pass a lot of exams but none of them is an intelligence test.

Hi there! Our first interaction on this site has been on the friends and family forum. We were also very excited about uncovering a goldmine of information and support!

Whew! We're a few days into the NSD and I must admit that Emile (he's the AS Kicker, not me) is doing EXTREMELY well. He was spasm free for several days, but today it started up with a vengance in his neck again. He said that he'd been eating a lot of sweets the day before and didn't know if the sugar caused acidity. Does anyone know if there is any evidence to substantiate this assumption? For my part, I'm trying to be as supportive of the diet as possible and we all eat the same food at night when we sit at the dinner table together.

Last night we ate Boerewors (a South African spiced sausage) with lightly fried tomato, onion and mushrooms. I do confess that it was SO DELICIOUS - despite the lack of potato - that I went around the corner and licked my plate. Something I haven't done since I was 14 yrs old! I had a good laugh. The tough part about trying to support my mate, though, is that I feel like a starchaholic. I don't want to make it hard on Emile, so if he's not around, you'll find me quickly cramming a biscuit or piece of bread. The worst is the guilty expression I get if he ambles into the kitchen whilst I'm stuffing my face :( .I seriously get withdrawal symptoms from cutting out starch. Hats off to all of you who are so committed!

Regards

Gabrielle

It can be the sugar but more likely it's the other things in the "sweets" that can cause problems if consumed in large quantities...."sweets" is sort of a generic term for candies? If it's not a plain type of dark chocolate, candy can have all sorts of things in it a sensitive person can react to, starches, artificial flavorings, and dairy lactose from milk solids.... You really want to be wary of caramel. Butter can be okay by itself, and sugar, in small quantities, okay by itself, but the act of cooking them together to caramelize makes them really bad for us. I think about the worst reaction I've had to some candy was 2 years ago when I ate some Valentine's Day candy, milk chocolate covered caramel fruit flavored nougats after lunch for several days. Gaaaaaah, bleeeeahhhh, what was I thinking?! My neck totally locked up in spasms and I had a migraine so bad I couldn't bear to go out without sunglasses.

You will find to make this work you will need to eat a bit more fat in your diet than you are used to if you are a female and socially programmed to avoid fat at all costs in the mistaken belief that fat is ....fattening. Fat is not fattening if you are burning it off as a fuel source in place of the grain carbs you used to consume. Mayonaise or olive oil is your friend. You also can find that if you take a calcium and magnesium supplement and a multivitamin that will help with the carb cravings. When one's blood levels of calcium drop too low the body tends to crave sugar/carbohydrates really badly for the temporary sugar rush high they can provide.

I bake little loaves of almond meal bread and keep it in the refrigerator for those moments when I really need something baked, like last night when we had some beef baked in a non starch barbeque sauce and there was extra sauce on my plate that I certainly was not going to waste !

Hi Gabrielle and welcome

Just thought I'd mention, we have not been able to find "safe" sausages to eat anywhere. All that I've seen contain wheat flour or some other starchy filler/binder. So sausies are out for my husband unfortunately.

Sucrose (refined table sugar) and also lactose can serve as a secondary food source for the kleb bacteria so my husband avoids milk products and limits his sugar intake. Milk products seem to affect him way worse than sugar however. Even in milk products with no lactose (like aged hard cheese or homemade yoghurt) my husband will react badly which has led us to believe it must be the milk protein (casein) that is the problem. He can tolerate moderate amounts of hard cheeses but the rest is out for him. He began to make his best progress on the diet once he eliminated dairy in addtion to starch.

Herbs are OK but many spices are starchy (eg. pepper, cinnimon)

All the best to you and Emile

Hi Chelsea

Thanks for that! I'll make a point of asking at the local butcher what exactly they DO put into the Boerewors. Being made in-house by most butchers, there is no list of ingredients on the product. Just your price per kg, weight and sell-by date.

Keep well.
