If you want to use this QR code (Quick Response code) just save the image and paste it where you want. You can even print it and use it that way. Coffee cups, T-Shirts etc would all be good for the QR code.

I recently got diagnosed with AS, I was wondering if I should stop taking indocin while trying the diet. I did the diet for one day I took 25mg indocin once that day but I got stomach pain only having apples and water in my stomach. Plus I was in physical pain because I didnt take enough indocin. Has anyone else had this problem, is there anything i can use to coat my stomach, without messing up the diet?? Thanks Christopher

Hi Christopher,
Nothing states you need to stop taking your meds if attempting to follow the diet. Quite a few actually still take their meds in conjunction with diet and then slowly taper off the meds as they see improvement.
I think it is a goal to come off the NSAID's eventually since they cause damage to the GI lining and can lead to a worsening of symptoms as a result (increased gut permeability).
Food for thought... if struggling with what foods to eat post what you are eating.
Take care,
Tim

Christopher;
I second what Tim says, the goal of the NSD is to get the pain level down over time, so in my case I'm still taking painkillers while I get the diet fine tuned.
For the diet to kick in most likely takes months for most people it seems, and for those of us with pretty serious pain and stiffness (and jobs and family responsibilities) to try and go cold turkey with no pain relief at all would be a rough ride. I have found that after a few months on the diet I've been able to cut my painkiller intake by almost half most days, and hopefully with more fine tuning and work this will go down even more.
During the apple fast, however, I followed John's advice and took no meds or vitamins. It was a little rough, but hopefully next fast won't be as bad.
Good luck,
Elbert

Christopher, The problem with NSAIDs is that the help strip away the mucus lining of the intestine, giving it less protection and potentially making it more porous for the kleb to slip through. This does not mean you need to go cold turkey however although you should only take them after food. I know it is not nearly as effective against the pain, put paracetamol or (tylenol (sp?)in the US) do not effect the intestine at all. (Please note that aspirin is also bad for the intestine). Regards, Charlie
