Hi. If one had to choose an over the counter that you could use regularly and reasonably frequently - but woul dleave you with the least lasting damage - , what would it be out of asprin, ibuprofen and paracetamol?

Also, does anybody use Bextra? I am using this but don't seem to come across it on the forum much.

Thanks

Adam

Adam aloha

I take Bextra 20mg...cut in half... half am & half pm w/food

I am accustomed to taking something daily...tried vioxx (allergic reaction), celebrex (nasty, nasty tummy),
and Mobic (noxious weapon of mass destruction)...and Bextra in a three month period...well our conclusion was
that Bextra was the least toxic of the contending pretenders...yes it seems to pretend to work and I go along.
my new rheumy is a bit contemptuous of Bextra...but what other affordable (HAH !) choices are there ?

Billy,

This information is just general health information that is readily available to the public. I tend to like to use generic drug names and put the brand names in the parenthases. I think that people who routinely take over-the-counter drugs should know the generic names.

If acetaminophen (paracetamol, TYLENOL) works for you, that's probably the best, but you must not take more than four grams per day and if you do use that much, you must not have more than two alcoholic beverages per day. Use too much Tylenol or mix it with a lot of booze, not so hot on the liver.

The NSAIDS (Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs) all can cause damage to the stomach lining. The three NSAIDS available over the counter are Aspirin, ibuprofen (MOTRIN, ADVIL, NUPRIN), and naproxen (NAPROSYN, ALEVE). Naproxen is the one that is most commonly used to manage the symptoms of AS. It's generally given in a dose of 500mg twice or three times daily. NSAIDs should not be used or patients with known kidney problems or a stomach ulcer (known or suspected) without the careful supervision of a physician. To help reduce the risk of having stomach problems, I took omeprazole (PRILOSEC) over-the-counter. It doesn't eliminate the risk, though.

Hope that helps.

And sorry, but I don't know much about Bextra.

Hi Adam,

My husband is taking 40mg of Bextra a day - 20mg morning and night. No problems so far & no side effects. Being of the cox-2 inhibitor family it should do less damage to stomach etc than traditional anti-flams but time will tell I guess.

Celebrex & Arcoxia (also cox-2 drugs) didn't seem to work so he's sticking with Bextra. The only over-the-counter type he tried was Voltaren which seemed to work well but that can stuff up your stomach etc long-term.

Mike,
Just wondering if you knew much about Mobic....I take 7.5 mg. twice a day, every day. I wasn't sure if that was good for my stomach or not. I've been on it for several months. Any advice would be great!
Thanks,
Kelley:)

Hi Adam:

Here's a thread that was started in this forum some time ago with a drug profile for Bextra.

https://www.kickas.org/cgi-bin/w3t/showthreaded.pl?Cat=&Board=drugs&Number=57967&page=6&view=collapsed&sb=5&o=all&part=

Sorry, it's too late tonight to try and make that look pretty.

Hugs,
Jeanna
