Hi. Within the 'Test Everything' outlook, what happens to you folks when you iodine an apple? You have one of three choices: light amber, dark amber/light brown or brown!

Also, Im having trouble assessing supplements. I dropped iodine on a calcium/magnesium tablet this morning and it went brown but I can never make up my mind if chalky pills wouls automatically go this colour due to porosity or something. Advice on vitamins/minerals would be greatly appreciated as the iodine always changes colour a bit.

Hi Leo,

With testing (apples included) what I do is put a drop of iodine on the dish next to the thing I'm testing as well, so I can compare the original colour. If it changes to anything darker then my husband doesn't eat it.

I am also having the same problem with supplements as you. I tested the calcium/magnesium and most of the pill stayed the same colour but it had tiny little speckles in it that turned black. So I didn't know if that small amount of starch would be enuf to cause trouble or not. So I also need advice here.

Hi Leo,

With supplements read the labels carefully, I have had 2 that caused issues due to the capsule. I generally stick with Solgars brand, they state no starch and I have yet to have a problem with their products.

I do not test with iodine, so no help there.

Curious Tim, no testing with iodine. How do you assess what's going into your system then?

I have been doing this now for 2 1/2 yrs, so I know what foods I have issues with and avoid them for the most part (do a little cheating, maybe once a week now and then).

When I do try something new, try to keep everything else constant so I can evaluate the new food or supplement.

That is the way I approach it, does not mean it is the best method

I'm yet to start the NSD and currently preparing for it, but today have encountered exactly the same query as you Davinci.

I've iodine tested three brands of supplements - Holland & Barrett turned dark black, but more worringly Nature's Own and Solgar turned dark brown (although they both claim to be "starch free"). However, I'm reassured if you say you've experienced no problems with Solgar Tim.

I also tested some apples which turned grey-brown, including an organic one (but to a lesser extent).

I'm very new to all this so don't know if I'm being overly cautious or not...

The Iodine reaction is only indicating starch when there is a colourisation towards blue or black and not when it turns into amber darker brown etc. Apples contain only traces of starch and are in my view always ok.

Thanks Gerald, that's reassuring.

However, I had blue-black reaction to quite a lot of fruit and veg where I haven't expected it. Will post a quiery about this on the main board.
