My husband is nearly horizontal from his mid shoulders up. He is feeling choked and has pain radiating down his shoulder to his elbow. His AS has kicked in to high gear between his shoulders and this is pulling him farther forward. His neck is completely fused as well as some ribs and an SI joint. He's in pain (who isn't) and is on Enbrel and Lortabs. He takes 2 a day at least and more on the weekends when he doesn't have to go to work. Does anyone have suggestions about surgeries or treatments to straiten him? PT works very little. What kind of doc besides a Rhuemtologist should we see? Thanks for your help!

Hi karen

Welcome to AS.

Sorry I can't give you any information on your questions. I am one of the lucky ones and am still straight.
But maybe John (cheerful) can help. I think he has similar problems.

Karen I believe the surgery is called Wedge Osteotomy for the back. You can do a search and see what you come up with. You might want to consult with a Orthopedist who specializes in spine surgery. And one one who has done many, many of them. I had a consult with one here at Yale and he said I wasn't a candidate yet and that it is a very difficult surgery and they can and do go bad. He said they only consider them when a patient has difficulty swallowing.

Good luck.

My horizontalism was caused by a straightening of the lumbar spine..! so perversely, the surgery to straighten the shoulders and neck was in fact carried out upon the lumbar region. L2 and L4. What we here call adouble Lumbar Osteotomy. The pictures of me on the Adelaide Spine Clinic website, illustrate the circumstance described above

Yes indeed, there are several of us in KickAS who have had such straightening surgery including Alan (Ineptwill), myself (OldGeorge, Brad (Wolverinefan) plus a couple of others whose names escape me at the present.

My before and after surgery pictures can be seen on this site in the ASKickers personal stories (see OldGeorge story Part 2)
