I'm so upset!

It was on the news today. One of my favorite homeopathic cold remedies, Zicam, has become a possible threat to our health. There have been cases reported of anosmia, loss of smell.

I am really bummed out about this as it has been amazing in helping me get over colds extremely fast!

I have, in the past, been an advocate for this product and talked about it here in KA. I thought it was only right that I should pass on these disturbing findings.

So in the trash it goes!

Your very welcome my dearest John!

You know, I said I was going to throw it away and I was, but I just bought a bottle a few days ago. I already used it cause I'm getting over a cold Then I was talking to Lori and she said "bring it back!" and first I thought, nah I already opened it.

But the old Scottish blood kicked in and I thought about it for like, a second. Soooo, I am bringing it back to the drugstore with a copy of the article (just in case) and I'm getting my $ back!
Hey, why not? This stuff ain't cheap! Snort!

Hope your doing well today John!

I don't know if that product is a risk or not. I could not find any referreed medical articles on Zircam on PubMed. There were some articles that suggested 5% zinc sulfate could cause temporary loss of smell in mice, other articles that disagreed. Not sure if zinc gluconate has the same effect, or what the concentration is in Zircam.

I did notice the source for the warning - a website run by a law firm which specializes in product liability. My opinion - sometimes manufacturers deserve to be sued, other times they don't. If a company conceals dangers and misleads the public, or fails to take adequate steps to ensure a safe product, I say "sue away." But the idea that we can have powerful medicines with zero side effects ever is a pipe dream.

That law firm is also soliciting for people to participate in lawsuits against the manufacturer of Vioxx.

Well I can't complain about that. Vioxx stuffed me up pretty bad. Yes, I agree that these drugs are always going to have side effects ... The thing that annoys me most is not that these drugs have side effects, but that sometimes they do not include important information on known side effects to the consumer.. who I believe has a basic right to know. And what information is incuded is typically woefully inadequate and incomplete.
