I post to find out if anyone has ever had problems with their bladders. I've never before realize before how much pain an over filled bladder. My Doctor so far, has not a logical reason for this to hapen.

When Dorrit saw that I was in so much pain, she got me into the car and hustled over to the hospital. They checked me out with an ultrasound probe as saw the the bladder was overloaded.

After consulting with one of the resident Doctors, a nurse installed a catheter and drained the bladder. It took a few minutes for almost 1450 ml of urine to come out. On Mondy morning. I will be seeing a Urologist. I still have the catheter inserted and a bag taped to my leg to catch , , , , well, you know.

Does anyone know of any reasons fo explain why a blocked bladder happen? I think that the blockage may not be real as they had no problems inserting the cathetor. It is also a possibility that the S1and S2 nerves which exit from where the L5 nerve exits. Mayb some more nerve damage now showing up?

Wish the next two days will go faster.

George,

All I know about bladders.......I do remember several times my doc asking if I had problems ...well , you know......peeing. I always wondered why they asked. Then I had back surgery and I knew. I had a L3-4 discectomy and an L4 laminectomy. I couldn't pee after the surgery. Trauma to the nerves I guess. I had to do the in and out catheter thing until a few days later...with great concentration.....i could pee.

Other than that, I know with men, prostrate problems can lead to men not being able to pee. It happened to my dad, he had a catheter for 6 months and then surgery and now he is fine.

Hope that helps a bit.....

Sherri

I hope you get some answers soon cause the bull does not like seeing George in pain SNORT!

Georgie,

One thing that makes it practically impossible for me to pee sometimes is certain medications I am on. If all else fails, you might want to have them take a look at any meds you are taking and see if they can cause bladder problems. It might have been anti-depressants that caused it but I've tried so many meds over the years for different things that I can't put a finger on which meds did it. My bladder is very sensitive to this problem.

When it happens and I just can't go, I actually wish I was catheterized so I could kick back and let it all go in the bag so I wouldn't have to get up to the bathroom 20 times a day! How crazy is that desire?? No offense intended, I know how uncomfortable it can be to have a cather in.

Did they check you for a bladder infection yet?

Good luck George! I hope they find the problem soon!!

Love,
Cristina

Kys ta shiu? Hope the family are well.

Acute urinary retention can occur due to spinal nerve problems, but this would usually affect the bowel as well.

Generally, the main culprit is enlargement of the prostate gland, a natural part of *breathe in....* aging *breathe out....* (Hope that hasn't ruined your street cred too much George, but rest assured that we ALL know that despite the username, you really should be called YoungGeorge )

Because you've been referred to a Urologist as opposed to a Neurologist, I'm thinking that maybe your doc is going with the potential prostate link at this point??

Just to let you know what the usual regime for acute retention is here: bloods then catheterisation then physical examination (not always - sometimes left for Urologist to do) refer to Urologist who depending on the former will probably suggest medication - Tamsulosin (Flomax) or Finasteride (Proscar) are currently de rigeur - and then after a couple of days TWOC (!!) - i.e. Trial With Out Catheter and if no probs, carry on with meds. From what I've seen, the meds seem very good, and substantially reduce the need for surgery.

Hope this helps, and hope you are feeling better soon,

All the very best to you fella,

Slane lhiat,

Jan

Two things come to mind. Kidney stone plugs ureter, inlarged prostrate gland pinches the ureter off so no liquid can pass.

Fastyr Mie Jan,

Feer vie, Cre'n-ash ta shiu hene?

Yeah, the boys are doing well at College and Dorrit is working a bit more as a movie extra.

You're absolutely right. When I had the start of my pain in the legs problems, I went to A Neurologist. Basically he said, there is too much damage on of your nerves that are coming out at L5 area on the spine and he did say that in later years, I may have problems that arise from any Neuropathy.

My Doctor llikely flipped a coin (in his mind) and said that we should go with the Urologist first as it may be a Prostate problem as it has grown larger but not substantionally. If we get nowhere at all, then it's off to the Neurologist who has already told me in my visit of 18 months ago, that all my problems with S1, S2 and L5 nerves are beyond surgical repair.

I had 9 vials of blood taken a few weeks ago and the resuls were that I was normal. My Doctor has already given me a med called (PMS-OXYBUTYNIN 5mg) which I haven't looked up on the net yet but in his words, it is for "bladder repairs".

According to the Neurologist, he can't prescribe anything more than pain relievers and with only such a small part of my stomach left, I would be afraid of having the neurologist prescribe medictions that would only shorten my life. I am aware of the pain that runs through the groinalogical area (credit to Archie Bunker) is being quite a nuisance but I can handle that by better positioning of my Farabloc screen.

I do appreciate your comments Jan and it gives me a better overview of my options.

Hugs,

Slane lhiu son y traa t'ayn,

George

Some times you can retain urine from a side effect of narcotics. If you have an enlarged prostate it can physically block urine flow. Nerve communication faulty, you can't feel when you need to go. Hope you get this figured out. Lots of love, Nancy
